Residential Mechanical Engineering and Fabrication/Welding Apprenticeship (Mallaig)
Harland & Wolff are seeking an enthusiastic Apprentice Mechanical Engineer and an Apprentice Fabricator/Welder to join our dynamic team. This is a unique opportunity for individuals passionate about the art of Ship Building and Ship Repair, who are eager to develop their technical skills in a hands-on environment.
At Harland & Wolff’s newly acquired boatyard in Mallaig, we are in the process of redeveloping the site bringing it in line to accommodate the different types of vessels operating on the West coast. Offering various services and general repairs ranging from paint work, engineering, welding, and fabrication, we also provide pre inspections and safety reports designed specifically for individual vessels. We will be able to offer In-Service Support where we travel near and far providing these services to get vessels back to work as quickly and safely as possible.
Your first year will be based full time at UHI Inverness college, where you will live in the Halls of residence, which will be government funded. During college breaks, you will come to the yard in Mallaig and have the opportunity to spend time putting your practical skills into real projects on the yard with the help of experienced mentors.
Annual wage to year one: £18,470.40
Hours per week: 37 hours per week
This is a four year apprenticeship programme. Year one is a full time Residential at UHI Inverness. Years 2-4 are onsite work-based qualifications.
What you will learn
1. How to produce components using hand fitting techniques.
2. How to produce sheet metal components and assemblies.
3. How to prepare and use Manual Metal Arc Welding Equipment.
4. How to prepare and use Semi-Automatic MIG, MAG and Flux Cored Arc Welding Equipment.
5. How to wire and test Electrical Equipment and Circuits.
6. How to Assemble and Test Electronic Circuits.
As an Apprentice, you will be involved in a variety of tasks that are crucial to the operation and maintenance of our boatyard. You will receive comprehensive training and mentorship, working alongside experienced professionals in the field.
Qualifications
Entry Requirements:
Mechanical Engineering candidates are required to have National 5 C or above in English Language, Mathematics, and a science subject or accepted equivalent (Application of maths is not accepted).
Fabrication and Welding candidates are required to have a National 4 pass in English Language and a National 5 C or above in Mathematics, or accepted equivalents (Application of maths is not accepted).
