This full time post is available from 6 January 2025 on a permanent basis.
The post of Lecturer in Photonic/Optoelectronic AI Computing will contribute to extending the research profile of Engineering at Exeter, particularly in areas related or complementary to Electronic Engineering, Metamaterials and non-von Neumann computing.
The University welcomes applications that build on Exeter’s internationally recognised research strengths in this area and meet our research and teaching needs within the department. Research areas of interest include, but are not limited to:
• Hardware for photonic/optoelectronic in-memory, neuromorphic and edge computing applications
• Photonic metamaterials for computing and sensing applications
• Metamaterial-based AI
The position of Lecturer in Photonic/Optoelectronic AI Computing will be based in the Engineering Materials and Manufacturing Research Theme led by Prof C David Wright. The group is part of the Engineering department, led by Professor Ion Sucala ( Engineering currently has over 100 academic staff across our Exeter (Streatham) and Cornwall (Penryn) campuses. The position will contribute to the work of the department’s wider Engineering Materials and Manufacturing Theme, and to the university’s Green Futures strategic priorities. The appointee will also be expected to engage with and support research activities of the university’s Centre for Metamaterial Research and Innovation (CMRI, see CMRI is an interdisciplinary research centre with academics drawn mainly from our departments of engineering and physics, and whose aim is to advance both the fundamental science and the real-world application of metamaterials. The appointee will have access to state-of-the-art nanofabrication and materials/device characterisation facilities.
The department of Engineering has recently embarked on an ambitious strategy – Exeter Engineering 2030. Our vision is to harness the power of engineering and innovation to create a sustainable and healthier future. The strategy is underpinned by significant investment in staff and facilities, and it aims to build on our existing strengths and continue to develop emerging areas, contributing to the University’s Strategy 2030.
