The Business Development Group in Gowan is responsible for bringing new business opportunities (i.e. products or M&A opportunities) to the Global Portfolio Asset Teams and Commercial Regions. Success requires a strong industry network, technical knowledge, sales and marketing experience, and experience with transactional work. This position will be responsible for developing and nurturing relationships with potential technology, product, or licensing sources that may be in line with Gowan’s Global Product Asset Team strategy. He/she will coordinate activities under the Head of Business Development’s supervision and will be responsible for managing specific third-party accounts that are of interest to Gowan. Activities to be coordinated include out/in-licensing agreements, asset purchases or divestments, entity purchases, key account plans, and technical sales/purchases. In addition, the key account manager will be responsible for building and maintaining the financial and marketing models to assess each opportunity. The position requires continuous effort and maintenance of an active network of counterparts within the Gowan group of companies. It also requires active internal communication to understand how market needs are developing and where the Gowan Tribe is identifying opportunities. The Global Business Development Manager should endeavor to strengthen Gowan’s market intelligence about the many crop-protection segments affecting Gowan’s main business and create a data foundation for new market opportunities. He/she should enhance relationships within the crop-protection sector and related industries by actively networking, attending industry functions, and communicating with third parties. He/she will work to understand long-term changes to agriculture, new technologies, and emerging competition regarding Gowan’s current business or segment it is looking to enter. When acquisition candidates are identified, the Global Business Development Manager will designate and lead an internal assessment process; he/she will assemble these teams and draw on the expertise of the regulatory, development, marketing, operations, and finance groups within the Gowan organization. He/she will analyze the opportunities relative to the market assessments provided by Gowan Marketing, propose suitable deal structures, and engage by negotiating with the seller. General Responsibilities: Establishment/maintenance of Key Accounts with Gowan strategic third parties. Maintain a positive forward-focused relationship. Create an annual account plan. Provide a cross-cutting function for Gowan Group when opportunities need to be placed into the right group (i.e. bios or manufacturing). Out & In-Licensing Ongoing discussion with Global Asset Management, Regional Marketing, and Commercial teams on portfolio management needs and active solicitation to key accounts to fill gaps. Opportunistic license deals to acquire new/novel technologies. Strategic pitches to acquire new/early-stage molecules from key accounts. Global M&A management for crop protection segment (assets and entities). Qualifications and Skills Required: Ideally the candidate should have at least three years of sales/marketing experience and/or background in the agriculture industry. He/she should quickly assimilate a technical foundation and broad understanding of crop protection, plant-health products, and integrated pest management approaches. He/she must also understand this in a business context and should be able to create financial models based on experience and available information. The ideal candidate would be fluent in at least two languages, with English being mandatory. Ideally, the candidate will have finished a graduate program related to business, marketing, or law. The position requires excellent communication abilities internally and with the external network and ability to piece the information into the big picture. It requires creative thinking as Gowan has flexibility to structure deals in diverse ways. The position often involves long hours with calls in different geographies. Mornings may begin early or evenings may go late. The position reports to the Global Head of Business Development, is based in Yuma, Arizona, and requires significant travel (estimated 40% of the time).
