Job overview
The Organisational Development Consultant is a key role in the Maternity Improvement Programme (MIP) team focused on driving and delivering substantial improvements across the Maternity Service in response to regulatory, coronial and practice reviews.
Working as a core member of the MIP Team, the post holder will provide leadership, direction, professional curiosity and direct support within maternity services. The post holder will work with key stakeholders and interdependent projects and programmes, to foster greater wellbeing, develop leadership capacity, develop a safety culture, a culture of civility and embed a sense of shared ownership/responsibility and accountability across the service. This will set the foundations for long-term sustainable change and improvement that will support the development of clinical excellence across maternity pathways.
Applying a ‘whole system’ perspective, the post holder will utilise a combination of organisational development and improvement skills to support the delivery of sustainable cultural and transformational change.
The post holder will quickly establish credibility, build and maintain excellent working relationships at all levels of the organisation, ensuring partnership working at all times and effectively bringing together programmes of work.
The post holder will work flexibly, across all Trust campuses and external locations as required.
Main duties of the job
As identified in the NHS People Plan (August 2020), Compassionate and Inclusive Leadership is at the heart of moving the NHS forward, as is a Culture of Civility. This role will be instrumental in ensuring leadership and cultural change within Maternity is aligned to the Trust’s Culture and Leadership Strategy and People Plan.
1. Provide leading edge thinking, advice and challenge to leaders on organisation development issues pertaining to major change QI programmes from a platform of systemic and complex change.
2. Work in close collaboration with others to ensure that OD and quality improvement interventions are integral and linked to all other activities within the MIP to achieve a holistic approach that drives delivery and change.
3. Support team working within the MIP Team by ensuring that individual effort is coordinated with other team members to meet overall team goals.
4. Influences and supports changes in organisational behaviour.
5. Consistently and effectively builds trusting relationships with individual leaders and teams.
6. Continuously builds the credibility and visibility of OD services within Maternity Services.
7. Gives advice and develops interventions resulting in service wide changes.
8. Working closely with the key stakeholders across NUH and partners e.g. Organisational Development Team, Learning Team, Human Resources, Quality Improvement and Transformation Team, Nursing & Midwifery Institute, Patient Safety Team.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
1. Communicate a wide range of OD information that is highly complex and highly sensitive to all levels across organisations including at a strategic level. This will require excellent interpersonal abilities and an ability to reach consensus.
2. Organise and deliver launch events, training sessions, and other OD and QI activities within maternity services.
3. Ensure staff and service user feedback is captured, used, addressed and effectively communicated within the programme.
4. Build and maintain positive, productive and effective working relationships with key stakeholders (internal and external), patients and partner organisations.
5. Lead by example in terms of leadership behaviour and effectiveness; unblock barriers to effective team working and establish collaborative and supportive working between relevant teams.
6. Communicate effectively on highly complex and sensitive subjects that may impact/delay a project delivery due to unforeseen circumstances and put solutions in place.
7. Act as a professional role model in dealing with staff, managers and teams in a sensitive and empathetic manner, utilising persuasive communication skills to provide OD advice and interventions for teams and team leaders.
Person specification
Training & Qualifications
* Professional and specialised knowledge acquired through Master’s Degree in OD or similar Teaching.
* If similar teaching, specialist training in Organisational Development.
* Evidence of continuing professional development relevant to OD and QI e.g. NHSI QSIR Practitioner.
* Accredited facilitator of one or more OD tools e.g. MBTI, WAVE.
* Project Management – Foundation level or equivalent experience.
* Teaching qualification.
* Qualification in Quality Improvement /Change Management Programme.
* Clinical background within NHS (e.g. Midwifery, Nursing, AHP, Medical etc.).
* Coaching Qualification.
* Emotional Intelligence, Appreciative Inquiry qualification.
Experience
* Significant experience of OD design, delivery, facilitation and evaluation of large scale change/improvement within a complex, multi-professional, unionised environment.
* Experience developing effective partnerships/relationships with local, regional and national context.
* Extensive networks in the field of QI and OD.
* Experience working at senior management level and experience presenting at Board Level.
* Proven experience of leading complex change and improvement programmes and working with others to support transformation.
* Experience of developing, implementing and reviewing policies and procedures, in partnership with others. Able to translate national and regional policy at a local level.
* Experience of applying specialist evidence-based methodology to successfully underpin safety, quality improvement and organisational strategy, at the level of the Board, across services, teams and with individuals.
* Experience of report writing, including business cases, plans/bids related to securing funding for development activity e.g. bid writing, charity applications etc.
* Experience of managing a team and leading/influencing without authority.
* Particular experience of consulting, engaging, negotiating and influencing multiple stakeholders, where opinions differ.
* Experience of working with complex teams, and resistance to change.
* Complex acute hospital environment experience at a senior level and working with system partners.
* Experience of sourcing and commissioning provision and providers.
* Experience of applying Human Factors and assessing safety climate and culture.
* Worked in an organisational turnaround team.
Communication and Relationship Skills
* Able to advise and work with staff at all levels and abilities and from a variety of professional and non-professional backgrounds, both internally and externally to the Trust.
* Excellent relationship building skills. Able to successfully articulate findings and recommendations from OD/QI interventions.
* Excellent written and verbal communication is key to this role e.g. business cases and business reports and proposals for presentation at Board level.
* Able to deliver workshops, chair meetings, deliver presentations and engagement events both face to face and virtually to differing levels of intellectual capability.
* Demonstrate the capability to motivate collaboration amongst different professional user groups and partners to improve service outcomes and performance.
* Excellent presentation skills e.g. communicate complex data in informative and engaging style.
* Excellent facilitation skills e.g. can engage the listener and mobilise human energy.
