Job summary Serious Hazards of Transfusion (SHOT) is the UKs independent professionally-led haemovigilance scheme. This is a unique opportunity to join an internationally respected organisation. Since 1996 SHOT has been collecting and analysing anonymised information on adverse events and reactions in blood transfusion from all healthcare organisations that are involved in the transfusion of blood and blood components in the UK. Where risks and problems are identified, SHOT produces recommendations to improve patient safety. The recommendations are published its annual report and circulated to all the relevant organisations including the four UK Blood Services, the Departments of Health in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland and all the relevant professional bodies and reporting hospitals. Main duties of the job Producing reports, presentations, manuscripts, surveys and studies on behalf of SHOT for the annual report, peer reviewed journals, symposia and for other publications and presentations as required. Working closely with the SHOT Working Expert Group (WEG) on interpretation of data for reports, publications and manuscripts. Setting up working groups and study teams to carry out research as agreed with SOM and MD. Co-ordinate all activities throughout the project. Leading on projects related to adverse incident reporting which may involve spending time in hospitals and blood establishments. Liaising with the SHOT Research Analyst over the writing of queries, selection and extraction of data adding expert interpretation and discussion. Formulating plans and initiating clinically-based in depth studies arising from SHOT data and trends, identifying data to be collected and methods of analysis and developing hypotheses. Critically appraising the data produced, literature searches and the timely production of reports, manuscripts and presentations of the data. Representing SHOT at Regional, National and International meetings and make presentations of clinical data and studies. Leading on the development of recommendations for action and changes in clinical practice based on findings, and interacting with external professional and regulatory bodies regarding this.
