Steeped in history and grandeur with its formal gardens designed by Capability Brown and unique architecture, Chilham Castle is an outstanding location never open to the public in its 400 years of history. The estate comprises of 330 acres of formal listed gardens, equestrian facilities, deer park, woods, and parkland including an avenue of ancient avenue of trees and a lake. Sitting high with sweeping views of the historic Stour valley, Chilham Castle provides an exclusive stay experience that once inspired Shakespeare amongst many others Chilham Castle, a historic estate nestled in the heart of Kent, spans over 300 acres of breathtaking gardens, nurseries, and grounds. We are seeking an Assistant Grounds Manager to join our team and support the care and development of these extraordinary grounds. This is a unique opportunity to work in a high-end formal garden, combining traditional horticultural practices with modern sustainability principles. Key Responsibilities: Assist in the maintenance and development of formal gardens, lawns, vegetable nurseries, and estate grounds to consistently high standards. Operate and maintain a variety of garden machinery, including tractors, mowers, and other equipment. Support the implementation of sustainable gardening practices throughout the estate. Conduct and update COSHH and Risk Assessments, ensuring safety protocols are adhered to. Supervise and manage staff and contractors to achieve gardening and maintenance goals in the absence of the Estate and Gardening manager Undertake regular tasks such as mowing, pruning, planting, weeding, and pest control. Maintain a proactive approach to the upkeep of the estate, addressing challenges as they arise throughout the seasons. Essential Skills & Experience: Proven experience working in a high-end formal garden environment Strong physical fitness and willingness to undertake hands-on work in all weather conditions. Practical horticultural knowledge and skills, with a meticulous eye for detail Competence in using and maintaining a wide range of garden machinery, including tractors Strong knowledge of COSHH and risk management principles Effective leadership skills PA1 and PA6 spraying certification (desirable but not essential) Chainsaw certification (desirable but not essential) Full driving license (essential) What We Offer: The chance to work on one of Kent’s most stunning estates.
