Job overview
This is a great time to join us at Kettering General Hospital. We are seeking to recruit a Specialist Surgical Pharmacist who will get the opportunity to rotate through various surgical specialties (including Intensive Care and Pre-op) and develop their clinical and leadership skills.
Applicants from pharmacists that have completed or are working towards completion of a Pharmacy Clinical Diploma are welcome. In addition, we would actively support completion of the non-medical prescribing qualification, subject to funding.
Job summary:
* To deliver, direct, develop and evaluate clinical Pharmacy services to the Intensive Care Unit and general surgical wards.
* To promote the safe, effective and economic use of medicines through a number of methods including the development of guidelines, teaching, training and audit.
* To coach, mentor and supervise those staff allocated and to participate in the provision of training to Pharmacy staff and other healthcare workers.
* To develop own skills, knowledge and expertise in all areas.
Main duties of the job
Clinical
* To provide a clinical Pharmacy service to all surgery wards (Acute admissions, Digestive Disease Unit, Intensive Care, Orthopedic, General Surgery) and Pre-op Clinic.
* To contribute to the development of protocols and guidelines within the above specialty areas and review any requests for the introduction of new medicines.
* Liaises with other pharmacists in the surgical team to ensure seamless care of patients transferred to/from the surgical wards.
* To assist the lead clinical pharmacists and business managers in the monitoring of medicines expenditure and delivering on any cost improvement programs.
* To work with Pharmacy and ward-based staff to investigate incidents and near misses and to implement and share lessons learnt/new ways of working as a result.
Education, training and leadership
* Continuously develop own knowledge and skills to stay abreast of new guidelines and developments in given area.
* Mentor, coach and train summer students, pre-registration students, junior pharmacists and apprentices.
* Undertake the role of preregistration tutor and or diploma tutor.
* Represent the department at Clinical Governance level meetings, senior meetings within the department and any other delegated responsibilities.
Person specification
* Master’s degree in Pharmacy
* Registration with the GPHC
* Postgraduate qualification in hospital Pharmacy (or completion of 2 year study toward one)
* 2 years post registration UK hospital experience
* Clinical experience in a range of ward/clinical areas
* Teaching/training/coaching
* Responsibility for a defined area requiring prioritisation/problem solving/delegation
* Experience of leading or implementing change
* Good clinical knowledge of commonly prescribed medicines
* Good knowledge of NICE guidelines for common conditions
* Good knowledge of the NHS and current priorities
* Preparation of guidelines involving other healthcare professionals
* Registered Independent prescriber
* Advanced Clinical Practitioner
