Consultant O&G with specialist training in Reproductive Medicine
Job overview
Applications are invited for a Substantive Consultant post in Obstetrics & Gynaecology with a focus on Reproductive Medicine.
The successful applicant will have clinical commitments in Gynaecology and specialist training in Subfertility. They are expected to have experience in acute gynaecology care including early pregnancy. Experience in Obstetrics and in Labour Ward care is desired, but applications would be welcomed from candidates seeking a Gynaecology only role. Additional training and experience in other gynaecological subspecialties including ambulatory gynaecology, abortion care, menopause, and adolescent gynaecology are desired.
A key component of this consultant post will be a significant contribution to specialist clinics such as reproductive medicine, menopause, and adolescent gynaecology. The successful applicant will be expected to work within the wider MDT and contribute to MDT, developing a leadership role and liaising with the Tertiary Centre when appropriate.
With an increased requirement for consultant oversight for maternity risk assessment and acute care, we have made significant improvements in our approach to high-risk Obstetrics and perinatal feto-maternal health.
The department is equally interested in enhancing upskilling and improving subspecialist gynae services including ambulatory gynaecology, menopause, and adolescent gynaecology.
Main duties of the job
The Women’s journey work stream of the OMS (Outstanding Maternity Services transformation project) recognized the need for consultant input for those women with risk factors. We have recently started a new project to include gynaecology acute and planned care under the umbrella of the OMS and we welcome individuals who have the experience and expertise to support gynaecology services transformation.
The post has an Obstetric clinical workload but equally includes regular sessions in outpatients and elective theatres. Other specialist interest areas within Gynaecology may also be accommodated within the job plan (Ambulatory Gynaecology, abortion care, colposcopy, menopause care, and urogynaecology).
Working for our organisation
At present, there are 23 consultants in post. There are 4 pure Consultant Obstetricians on the Out of hours on call Obstetric rota and currently 3 pure Consultant Gynaecologists on the Gynaecology on call rota as well as 14 consultants who cover both.
The advertised post currently includes a non-resident on call element for Obstetrics. There is a consultant on call for Obstetrics and another consultant on call for Gynaecology 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
The Women’s Services Clinical Service Unit currently offers a wide range of general and special interest in-patient and outpatient services. The Obstetric service includes an Obstetric triage unit, a pregnancy-related bereavement support team, as well as general antenatal clinics and a wide range of high-risk clinics for women with diabetes, haematological problems, perinatal mental health problems, small baby clinic, multiple pregnancy, infectious diseases, and epilepsy. Specialist Gynaecological services include outpatient Hysteroscopy, Colposcopy, Cystoscopy, early pregnancy assessment, and termination of pregnancy. All services are delivered at BRI except for an outpatient Hysteroscopy clinic and pregnancy loss clinic at Westwood Park Community Hospital.
Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust serves a female population of approximately 250,000 and there are around 5400 births per year in the unit. Approximately 50% of our women are from an ethnic background, mainly from Pakistan and India.
