Job responsibilities DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The Shift Engineer will be expected to carry out repairs, installation works and planned maintenance work on a multi-discipline basis, i.e. electrical, mechanical, plumbing and building disciplines, and diagnose and repair faults to complex engineering installations, plant, and equipment. The Shift Engineer will be expected to proactively increase their knowledge and capabilities in relation to the Building and Engineering systems housed on all Trust sites. Training and assistance will be provided where necessary to facilitate this process. To carry suitable and appropriate communications equipment (bleep, mobile phone, hand held radio etc) to enable a rapid response to both normal and out of normal working hours emergency situations to be provided. The Shift Engineer must be aware that emergencies can occur at any time and should at all times be ready to leave the current task in a safe environment/condition to attend the higher priority task. Where the response time may exceed 30 minutes the Estates Manager / Officer on-call is to be contacted to ensure suitable alternative arrangements are actioned. To ensure shift change over debriefing are provided to enable the incoming shift team member to provide continuity of service and to enable them be fully appraised of the hospitals engineering and building status. To proactively implement the changes to working practice that will arise from the on-going implementation of relevant Healthcare Standards. The Shift Engineer will be required to requisition replacement non-stock items in compliance with the Trust Standing Financial Instructions. Under the guidance of the Estates Management Team ensure all duties are undertaken to a satisfactory professional and technical standard, in compliance with all relevant regulatory and advisory frameworks, Trust policies and procedures and the departments Workforce Planning Portfolio. Develop and implement initiatives to improve the quality of Estates service provided to the Trust. Ensure that all asset service, computer generated and performance reading information resulting from work undertaken by the team is passed to the Maintenance Supervisor on a daily basis to enable the departments Workforce Planning Systems to operate to the required standard. To communicate effectively with wards, departments, managers, Specialist Contractors, and outside Agencies using tact and diplomacy in relation to Estates issues. Utilising written and verbal communication skills to ensure a standard of service delivery is maintained and the service user is fully informed of works affecting their areas of responsibility. The Shift Engineer must have the ability to explain technical issues to lay people in a reassuring way when dealing with emergencies. To supervise direct works staff, contractors and specialist staff as the need arises. To participate in the collation of information in relation to building and engineering assets. To be conversant with the operation of computerised Building Management Systems and to undertake training on the Trusts BMS systems as required. To carry out Plant Attendant duties where applicable to automated boiler plant after appropriate training as been provided. To ensure that all works carried out comply with all relevant regulatory, advisory and technical frameworks thereby enabling risk to both the post holder, patients, visitors and staff of the Trust to be minimised. The Trusts Risk Assessment pack provides information to ensure safe working practices are adhered to. Where applicable Personal Protective Equipment is available from the Estates stores. To undertake technical and safety surveys, provide comprehensive reports as required. Ensure that the Shift team do not contravene the Working Time Directive without prior agreement of the Estates Operational Officer/Manager. The Shift Engineers will plan and agree annual shift rotas, adjusting when required to ensure 24 hour/365 days cover and taking into account annual leave, absence through illness, training etc. Accurate records must be kept and maintained by the Shift Engineer. When dealing with emergencies where people are likely to be emotional, i.e. where staff, patients and the public may be trapped in a lift or in an area where a fire incident is occurring, the Shift Engineer must provide reassurance and support to calm the situation in a professional manner. To take an active role in energy conservation and advise the Operational Managers on initiatives to save energy. To Act-up where necessary to support Supervisors role in times of increased service demand due to sickness and/or annual leave.
