Junior Design Engineer We are looking for a proactive, creative and detail focussed design engineer with passion for design and good academic degree. You will be working in an industry leading, cross-functional team encompassing Product Design, Industrial Design, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Structural Analysis, Production Engineering, Prototyping and Reliability. Innovatively applying proven mass production principles to turn concepts into mass manufacturable and reliable products; that delight our customers. Generate innovative concepts for new and existing developments that solve real customer problems and provide maximum value. Execute assigned Change Requests for current production items Execute assigned value engineering projects Assist in preparation of departmental reports. Assist in updating departmental libraries and best practice guides. Create design data including: 3D CAD modelling using SolidWorks. 2D critical dimension drawings including relevant use of GD&T Support early-stage static simulation (Finite Element Analysis) where appropriate. 2D and 3D prototyping (using internal and external resources) Present ideas through sketches, hand-made prototypes and clear PowerPoint presentations for discussion and selection with the wider team and stakeholders throughout Brompton. As part of the team, you will conduct research relevant to each project covering: Design empathy - always keeping our customers at the heart of everything we do. Optimising value for customer and Brompton. Technical aspects of mechanical principles involved. Appropriate manufacturing methods based on Brompton capabilities and state of the art methods. Agree the mechanical, aesthetic, and ergonomic approach with the wider design team - then deliver this using the most relevant manufacturing technology. Generate and maintain bills of materials. Throughout your role you will also liaise with: Structural and Reliability Engineers to ensure detailed validation of the FEA is in-line with Brompton's standards. The purchasing team to ensure design concepts meet the financial targets set out for the projects. Production engineering to ensure designs are efficient for manufacture and meet the capabilities of our suppliers and the internal production team. Change Management team to ensure changes to current production items are introduced I accordance with Brompton processes. Quality to help generate inspection plans in line with the critical design requirements. Third party suppliers to liase on DFM and obtain initial part and tooling quotations. Marketing, Sales and Product Management to ensure they are informed and consulted on the designs as they develop - ensuring that product development is aligned with the needs of our customers. Skills Mechanical design. Experience in a similar role ideally within automotive, aerospace or consumer product development. CAD ability covering solid and surfacing techniques. Preferably Solidworks. An understanding of, and ability to, calculate static and fatigue strength requirements of your designs. Understanding and previous exposure to FEA is an advantage. Proven ability to produce designs to specified lead times and costs. Ability to communicate design concepts and rationale to the team, the wider company Some experience of relevant manufacturing and assembly techniques is an advantage: CNC Injection moulding Die casting Forging Fabrication Welding Paint and coating application Surface treatment Heat treatment Tube hydroforming Structural adhesive bonding Qualifications Master's or bachelor's degree in mechanical or product design engineering. A minimum of 1 years of relevant industry experience.
