Job Overview
The successful candidate will perform critical technical support to our Fire Engineering and Fire Surveying teams and clients UK wide. Here at Jensen Hughes, our clients trust us to respond rapidly and deliver conclusive reports, of the highest technical standard. You will undertake on-site fire safety inspections & surveys (particularly during the construction phase as well as the operational phase) and will be involved in external wall surveys during both new build and refurbishment schemes, undertaking fire stopping and fire compartmentation surveys, fire door inspections and from time to time fire risk assessments. You will ultimately support the fire safety disciplines at Jensen Hughes. You will report direct to the Divisional Director.
Responsibilities
* Undertaking external façade assessments and survey investigations to meet the requirement of the industry standard such as implementing the PAS 9980 methodology for existing buildings and the overall EWS1 process.
* Carrying out active and passive fire protection systems surveys and associated technical reports.
* Compliance assessment and understanding of the main British Fire Safety Legislation and standards applied to different building occupancies, such as Approved Document B (ADB), BS9999, BS9991 & BS7974 etc.
* An advanced knowledge of the Gateway processes and requirements as part of the design team in order to ensure funding is obtained for cladding refurbishment etc.
* Undertaking Life Safety Fire Risk Assessments including Construction phase, Pre-Occupation and during the building lifecycle including FRA reviews which are required periodically.
* Updating the passive fire protection and external wall technical knowledge base as industry updates are implemented including relevant manufacturers information.
* Take a lead role with quality assurance processes and validation as required for the Fire Surveying and Fire Risk Assessment team.
* Undertaking a third party oversight role of fire stopping, fire compartmentation and external wall installations.
* Ability to liaise with product manufacturers for all the required fire safety provisions and discuss tested details and primary test evidence which supports the installations in the field of application on-site.
* Undertaking visual and destructive fire doors inspections and confirming any non-conformities with reference to BS8214 and the door manufacturers information.
* Successfully win and tender work, manage your own client base whilst exceeding client expectations and earning repeat business.
* Complete monthly fee forecasting and invoicing.
* Providing in-house CPD presentations when the need arises in your specialist field.
* Keeping updated with the latest industry guidance, product literature and sharing this knowledge with the wider organisation as part of continuous improvement.
* Routinely travel to client sites for site surveys, fire risk assessments and meetings will be required on a regular basis with overnight stays required routinely.
* A good working knowledge of BS9997 is also desirable but not essential.
Requirements and Qualifications
* Degree educated in Building Surveying, Fire Safety Management, Fire Safety Engineering or other similar discipline.
* Fire Risk Assessment validator through a third party scheme.
* Member of the IFE, IFSM or other fire safety institution.
* Full UK driving licence and access to your own private vehicle.
* Extensive understanding of fire safety design and guidance for different building types.
* Extensive understanding of carrying out intrusive external wall surveys on a wide range of new and existing buildings such as high-rise residential, office buildings, large retail complexes, storage facilities and historic buildings.
* Experience undertaking fire compartmentation surveys for internal fire stopping installations and advising the contractor based on the relevant manufacturer's literature.
* The ability to author in-depth technical reports utilising the information obtained during the site inspection using both bespoke digital fire protection software, Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.
* Win work for the wider Fire Surveying team to ensure their diaries remain optimal.
* The ability to provide coaching and training to more junior members of the team including Fire Engineering and Fire Surveying Graduates.
* An advanced knowledge of the Fire Risk Assessment process is required and this includes communication with the responsible person and the Regulation 38 information required to make a suitable and sufficient assessment.
* An advanced knowledge of the Regulatory Reform Fire Safety Order 2005 and PAS 79 methodology.
* An advanced knowledge of construction methods, forms of construction, fire performance of external wall materials and associated cavity barriers/fire stopping installations.
* An advanced knowledge of internal passive fire protection products, fire testing regimes and the products field of application with reference to manufacturers installation details.
* The ability to have an elevated attention to detail when reviewing information and during the surveying process on-site. This includes managing contractors and providing suitable toolbox talks as required.
