1 st Class Pipe Fitter Purpose: Colonna's Shipyard is seeking a 1 st Class Pipe Fitter to support day shift operations in our Shipyard in Norfolk, VA. Job Description: Perform layout, fabrication, installation, testing and repair of pipe systems. Install simple systems without the use of blueprints. Perform target work for piping systems by taking an existing sample of an old piping system to make a new piping system. Construct dimensionally correct mock-up for off-site prefabrication, read blueprints, fabricate stands and jigs, and create targets. Construct piping systems within required tolerances. Track job from material list through completion. Fit pipe and properly prepare joints for welding to meet the specific requirements of the system on which work is being done. Utilize blueprints and make fabrication sketches from which another mechanic could fabricate a unit of pipe to complete work assignments. Determine and apply joint and system tolerances. Set up and operate burning torch. Fabricate and design pipe hangars. Perform tests on piping systems with air and water. Routinely Tack Weld, Silver Braze, Soft Solder, and Burn. Work with all materials and sizes of pipe and tubing. Calculate take-ups of butt welds, socket welds, and threaded joints. Lay out all piping systems. Safely complete local air testing, compressed air testing and hydrostatic testing. Operate pipe bending machines. Evaluate joint allowances and build the piping systems within required tolerances. Work with all types of pipe joints such as welded, screwed, soldered, and glued. Work with various types of materials such as copper, CuNi, Cres, Steel, etc. Train subordinates and supervise crew as senior mechanic. Adhere to industry codes, specifications, and regulations. Understand and act upon instruction / work independently to complete responsibilities. Qualifications: Must have at least seven (7) years’ experience in shipboard Pipefitting. Must have the ability to use hand tools and instruments associated with the Pipefitting trade including but not limited to, pipe benders, bandsaws, bench grinders, drill presses, pipe threaders. Must be able to work effectively with others. Must be trained in the NAVSEA Standard Items that are applicable to the pipefitter trade and demonstrate an advanced understanding of bevels, types of backing rings, consumable inserts (E/B rings), open roots, saddles, miters and tolerances. Must be able to comprehend blueprints, sketches, and templates. Must be able to calculate and understand units of measure, including fractions and decimals. Must know how to measure using a scale and tape measure. Must have regular, reliable attendance. Desired Qualifications: Prefer Technical Training. Previous experience working at Colonna's highly preferred. Security Requirements: Must be able to access Government facilities and obtain and maintain a DBIDS. Position requires US Citizenship. Travel Requirements: Minimal Travel; 10% or less. Physical Requirements: Must be able to lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes. The exact weight requirements will be determined by the specific job, but no less than 20 lbs. Must be physically agile to perform tasks in naval ships. Able to work on and climb ladders, work in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions and in confined spaces, including enter and moving through manholes. May ride ships at sea for extended periods Able to perform other duties as required which may involve high heat, humidity, noise and dirty conditions, working aloft or over the sides of vessels. Frequent exposure to noise due to machinery and equipment. Employee is required to operate trucks, forklifts & man-lifts. While performing the duties of this job, you may frequently be required to stand, walk & sit; use hands or fingers; handle or feel; talk and hear. Occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, climb and balance, stoop, squat, kneel, twist and crawl. Work in extreme temperatures and conditions. At times you will work in areas that have less adequate ventilation Frequent use of respirator. Protective clothing or equipment and face shields or goggles shall be worn when welding, cutting, or working with molten metal.
