JOB OVERVIEW
**INTERNAL VACANCY**
We have available a Full time Medical Laboratory Assistant vacancy where you will join our Pathology Specimen Reception team, based at The Princess Royal Hospital, Telford. The role of a Medical Laboratory Assistant is varied and involves supporting the scientific staff (Biomedical Scientists) in the receipt, data entry and pre-analytic preparation of patient samples, maintaining stocks of consumable items, disposal of chemical and/ or biological waste, and maintaining and decontamination of complex laboratory equipment and as such is a key role in supporting a diagnostic service. The successful candidate will be required to work at the Community Diagnostic Hub at Hollinswood House one day per week. The community diagnostic hub is a new initiative to provide a “one stop shop” for rapid diagnosis. The hub includes phlebotomy, imaging, ECG, ultrasound scans and dialysis unit. We are seeking passionate and self-motivated individuals who have an organised approach with good attention to detail and who can remain calm in stressful situations. MAIN DUTIES OF THE JOB
To assist in supporting a diagnostic service, by performing a range of routine tasks that may either be defined verbally by staff supervising you, or by following written instructions, usually in the form of Standard Operating Procedures. An MLA is expected to perform a range of tasks of a similar nature and level of responsibility that contribute towards an integrated,diagnostic service. In particular you will: * Follow tasks that are defined in writing, but may be communicated to you verbally by a member of staff supervising you.
* Receive, sort, label and distribute specimens.
* Entry of patient demographic details and specimen requests onto
the laboratory computer system. * Maintain, where appropriate, accurate records of the work assigned to you. * Prepare specimens for testing

In the Blood Sciences department you will be working alongside a friendly, expert and energetic team of Consultants, Clinical Scientists, Biomedical Scientists and Associate Practitioners. As part of your role, you will be required to participate in the out of hours working rotas of the department - including evenings, nights, weekends and Bank/ Public holidays, according to service needs.
