Due to growth in numbers, we are delighted to advertise for a Teacher of Psychology.
Psychology is part of the Social Sciences department which also includes Geography, Economics and Sociology. We currently offer A level Psychology (AQA) with Forensic Psychology enrichment. The Social Sciences Department is one of the largest in the College and has had notable success in attracting and retaining students. Psychology is a popular course and at present there are 358 students following the syllabus. Student success rates in examinations are very good.
The Department has a reputation for being extremely supportive and new staff will always be given every assistance with books, resources and any other help they may need. Staff work closely together to plan schemes of work and share good practice. Links with local schools and employers are very good.
The courses are well resourced with large dedicated teaching rooms. Innovation in teaching approaches is very much welcomed and supported. We aim to create constructive and supportive relationships with our students and it is the tradition at Queen Mary’s for staff and students to be on first name terms. Teachers are committed to providing a high level of support for students and give freely of their time to ensure this takes place.
Our priorities are to maintain and extend our examination success and to maintain high levels of student retention. We seek to ensure that we provide students with an experience of learning that is as engaging, interesting and active as possible.
JOB DESCRIPTION
Teaching Duties
The person appointed will teach predominantly A level Psychology. Flexibility to teach other courses, such as Criminology (WJEC) and/or Sociology (AQA) is desirable.
Our students are currently studying:
1. Paper 1: Introductory Topics in Psychology
2. Paper 2: Psychology in context
3. Paper 3: Issues and Options in Psychology (we cover schizophrenia, gender and forensic psychology)
There is sometimes the opportunity to teach across Departmental boundaries, although this can naturally not be guaranteed. Where possible the College will try to be flexible over the subjects to be taught, taking into account personal experience, skills and preferences.
Personal Tutor Responsibilities
The Personal Tutor has two primary responsibilities: to support and to inform.
The Personal Tutor plays a vital role in motivating, monitoring, supporting and guiding students’ academic progress through the College. Daily and weekly attendance reports, and the student profiling cycle provide valuable information about individual progress, and enable Tutors to identify problems at an early stage. It is the responsibility of the Tutor in the first instance to act upon this information as appropriate. This may mean, for example, offering advice, liaising with other subject staff or organising additional subject support.
Some students will experience personal difficulties during their time at College, and these may well be brought to the Personal Tutor, especially if academic progress is being hindered.
It is the responsibility of the Personal Tutor to ensure tutees are aware of College events, policies and procedures.
