Job Description
The salary for this role is £54,376 (inclusive of a Specialist Allowance). Onsite working is expected for 3 days each week, however, we actively support requests for flexible working.
This role is based at the following site; Culham, Oxfordshire.
This role requires employees to complete an online Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS), including The Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) checks for criminal convictions and possibly a search of open source data.

As Senior Mechanical Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in providing technical support to projects to facilitate the escalation of the Technology Readiness Level (TRL) by leading the requirements capture, component and system design, assessment, and commissioning for the tritium fuel cycle plant and associated equipment to deliver safe and viable solutions and facilities for tritium research.
Key Accountabilities:

* Lead the engineering delivery of a Supplier Engineering Package, ensuring designs meet requirements and standards.
* Support the development of project strategies and prioritisation, contributing technical expertise to shape project direction.
* Prepare and manage procurement specifications, including scope of work, bid evaluations, supplier document reviews, and technical queries.
* Oversee supplier interactions, including factory acceptance tests (FATs), change management, contract support, and compliance with technical control standards.
Qualifications
Essential:
* Relevant qualification in mechanical engineering.
* Demonstratable experience in a systems-engineering approach to long-term plant performance and availability.
* Demonstrable knowledge of thermal and structural design, plant engineering, design of experiments, manufacturing and joining, additive manufacture, synthesis of materials and magnetics and superconductors.
* Experience of safety management systems, including hazard identification, risk assessments and hazard elimination and mitigation.
* Able to demonstrate excellent and adaptive interpersonal and communication skills – engage effectively with technical and non-technical audiences.
* Experience of, and excellent, technical report writing skills.
* Ability to plan, organise and prioritise workload.
* Good IT literacy and competency in utilising SharePoint and MS Office – Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.
* Ability to use initiative to resolve queries or issues and improvements.
Desirable:
* Chartered engineer or scientist or be able to demonstrate working at that level.
* Experience in the maintenance / or operation of a process plant, or in a laboratory environment, and handling radioactive materials or other hazardous materials.
* A basic understanding of radiological hazards.
