THE ROLE
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Engineering Manager to lead several teams of talented engineers in delivering high-impact, scalable, and innovative solutions for bbc.com. This role is crucial to driving the technical direction, team development, and successful delivery of projects that align with our company’s goals and values. As an Engineering Manager, you will collaborate with cross-functional teams, balance technical depth with leadership acumen, and foster a culture of excellence.
Key Responsibilities
Team Leadership and Development
1. Responsible for recruitment, onboarding, and retain top engineering talent.
2. Provide mentorship and career development for team members, fostering a growth-oriented environment.
3. Setting clear expectations and manage performance to ensure accountability and high standards.
Technical Oversight
4. Guide the team in architecting, building, and maintaining robust, scalable systems.
5. Conduct code reviews and provide technical feedback when needed.
6. Ensure adherence to best practices in software engineering, including coding standards, testing, and documentation.
Strategic Planning and Execution
7. Align team objectives with company goals and business priorities.
8. Develop and execute project plans, balancing feature delivery, technical debt, and team capacity.
9. Identify, mitigate, and communicate risks to ensure timely and high-quality project delivery.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
10. Partner with Product Managers, Designers, and other stakeholders to ensure well-defined requirements and deliver impactful solutions.
11. Drive alignment and build consensus across different functions and teams.
Organisational Influence
12. Advocate for and implement technical and organisational improvements.
13. Collaborate with peers and leaders to drive cross-team initiatives.
14. Contribute to shaping the engineering culture, promoting inclusivity, collaboration, and innovation.
WHAT DOES IT TAKE?
KEY CRITERIA
15. Proven experience with designing and scaling distributed systems.
16. Hands-on coding experience and the ability to contribute or guide technically when necessary.
17. Experience using Javascript/Typescript, React, Go, and AWS.
18. Experience managing performance, resolving conflicts, and fostering team alignment.
19. Expertise in Agile methodologies and managing iterative development processes.
20. Experience driving data-driven decision-making and measuring success through metrics and KPIs.
21. Leadership experience in mentoring, developing, and retaining top engineering talent.
22. Strong foundation in computer programming principles, including data structures, algorithms, design patterns, and system design.
DESIRABLE CRITERIA;
23. Previous experience as an Engineering Manager or similar leadership role.
24. Experience working with large-scale, consumer-facing systems.
25. Demonstrated track record of driving organisational change and innovation.
