The role
As a Commercial Manager, you’ll have a role that’s out of the ordinary. Babcock has started a series of major infrastructure projects at Devonport in Plymouth. Over the next ten years Babcock will develop state of-the-art facilities to meet the evolving requirements of the UK’s Royal Navy.
Day-to-day, you’ll provide support to our Major Infrastructure Project (MIP) portfolio operating from Devonport Royal Dockyard providing support to New Engineering Contract (NEC4) construction projects at Devonport Royal Dockyard where we are a key strategic partner to our customers, the MOD and the Royal Navy.
1. Provide commercial expertise and governance to internal stakeholders (finance, project teams, supply chain, senior management) for tenders and contract reviews, processes, policies and commercial risks.
2. Be competent and confident when interacting with stakeholders and will work to develop positive customer relationships in order to represent the company to negotiate price, NEC4 terms and scope.
3. Oversee the production of change orders to a Qualifying Defence Contract (QDC) together with gathering and assessing robust Appropriate Attributable and Reasonable (AAR) evidence to support contract change.
4. Act as an escalation point for high risk, commercial issues.
5. Provide advice and drafting in relation to client and supplier NEC4 terms and conditions, ensuring compliance with all internal processes.
This role is full time 35 hours per week and provides hybrid working.
Essential experience of the Commercial Manager
6. Significant commercial experience in robust management of large and complex construction contracts, bids and change initiatives in a regulated environment
7. Demonstrable evidence of developing effective customer relationships and confident at negotiating independently within agreed delegations
8. Knowledge of NEC4 ECC and PSC terms.
9. Ability to effectively lead and develop a team.
10. Attention to detail with the ability to identify commercial risks, propose steps to mitigate, and communicate effectively.
Qualifications for the Commercial Manager
11. Educated to degree level (ideally Business, Law, MRICS, MCIOB or similar), equivalent qualification or relevant experience.
