Overview of project/role
As a Welding Inspector you will be responsible for undertaking inspections before, during and after welding in accordance with BS EN ISO 17637 (Non-destructive testing of Welds - Visual Testing) on safety critical rolling stock vehicles and components. You will be required to investigate and report non-conformance and compile assurance documentation.
The ideal candidate needs to ensure that the requirements of the workshops BS EN 15085 (Railway applications. Welding of railway vehicles and components Requirements for welding manufacturer) & ISO 3834 (Quality requirements for fusion welding of metallic materials) control manual are complied with throughout the repair process.
Key Accountabilities
* To complete inspections before, during and after welding according to the inspection and test plan, including any final inspections and testing in accordance with the inspection and test plan.
* To carry out independent non-destructive testing of welds according to the inspection and test plan and to identify corrective actions needed to assure the standard of work.
* To interpret engineering drawings to ensure fabrications are produced in accordance with the drawing, comply to specifications and produce dimensional reports. To work in collaboration with the welders and operational managers to ensure consistency, quality and that railway assets meet or exceed minimum assurance levels.
* Record and report on non-conformances through the Logistics & Manufacturing (L&M) Quality Management system. Compile and complete quality documentation packs and verify the content is to the required standard.
* Accurately report on hours worked and cost to be recharged to customers to ensure value for money at all times.
* Conduct internal surveillance audits in accordance with BS EN 15085 & ISO 3834 to ensure a consistent welding standard, skills and competencies of staff to ensure that the requirements of the mandatory standard are met.
* At all times ensure that production activities are in accordance with the Manufacturing and Maintenance Welding Control Manual plus process confirmation checks to ensure best practice at all times.
* Witnessing welder qualification tests in accordance with ISO 9606 (Qualification testing of welders) part 1 and 2 to maintain the competency of the welding team and their ongoing professional development and ability to meet minimum standards for Fleet welding tasks. As well as coaching and mentoring welding staff to maintain standards.
Skills, Knowledge & Experience
Skills
* Have highly developed written and verbal communication skills coupled with excellent interpersonal / organisational skills.
* Be self-motivated, numerate, cost conscious and possess a high level of analytical skills.
* Ability to read and understand Technical Drawings and welding specifications.
Knowledge
* Have a level 4 qualification in either Mechanical Engineering or Fabrication & Welding or relevant experience in an engineering discipline plus a proven track record in a quality control related role.
* Minimum qualification to CSWIP 3.1 Welding Inspector or equivalent.
* Working knowledge of the requirements and application of ISO 5817 (Welding — Fusion-welded joints; ISO 10042 Welding — Arc-welded joints in aluminum and its alloys) ISO 3834 and EN 15085.
* Previous qualification in MIG/MAG; TIG and MMA welding.
* Computer literate and able to use the Microsoft Office software packages (Excel, Word and Access).
* Knowledge of working in a rail or large-scale manufacturing environment.
Experience
* Welding inspection experience and applying the following standard requirements:
o ISO 5817 Welding — Fusion-welded joints quality levels for imperfections;
o ISO 10042 Welding — Arc-welded joints in aluminium and its alloys;
o ISO 3834 Quality requirements for fusion welding of metallic materials;
o EN 15085 Railway applications. Welding of railway vehicles and components Requirements for welding manufacturer.
* Working knowledge of ISO 17637 Non-destructive testing of Welds - Visual Testing.
* ISO 9606 Qualification testing of welders.
