Job overview
We have an exciting opportunity for a Community Matron to lead Whittington Health’s Community Children’s Nursing Team. The Community Matron will provide clinical leadership and staff management, while developing innovative community children’s nursing services within North Central London. You will be responsible for leading various teams including the CCN service, Life Force palliative care team, Hospital at Home across Islington and Camden, Paediatric Nurses in Primary care and the NCL bladder and bowel team.
The Community Matron role is a pivotal member of the senior nurse leadership team, and you will be expected to demonstrate excellent communication skills, always acting as a role model, whilst providing expert clinical practice. We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic candidate who works well both independently and as part of a team.
Main duties of the job
* Senior Nurse leading teams of Children and Young Person’s Community Nursing.
* Overall responsibility for the management of the generalist Community Children’s Nursing Team (CCNT).
* Lead nurse in children/young people’s palliative care issues within Islington, Camden and Haringey.
* Ensure services are provided to children and young people within NCL.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
* Participate in the planning and delivery of community children and young person’s nursing.
* Direct line management responsibility for the nursing team.
* Provide senior nursing/professional leadership to the nursing team.
* Work with clinical and non-clinical staff to design and deliver innovative solutions.
* Ensure appropriate standards of nursing care are delivered.
* Support children and families, identifying and acting on any issues.
* Monitor overall professional performance of nursing staff within the team.
* Provide an accessible and authoritative presence for staff and families.
* Work with the senior nursing team to develop and implement nursing practices.
* Champion children/young people’s palliative care, liaising with local commissioners and multi-disciplinary teams.
* Provide knowledge, support, and communication with the multi-disciplinary team.
* Coordinate the Life Force team providing training, support, and supervision.
Person specification
Qualifications
* RSCN or RN (Child Branch).
* Community Qualification ideally CCN Specialist Practitioner.
* Relevant first level degree or equivalent.
* Evidence of work-based learning and ability to meet competencies.
* Master’s degree in appropriate subject or working towards.
* Independent Prescribing or commitment to work towards.
* Palliative Care Course.
* ENB 240.
Experience
* Extensive experience of working within a community setting at Band 7 or above.
* Experience of working with children with life-threatening or life-limiting conditions.
* Evidence of team and staff management.
* Nursing in a multi-racial inner-city community.
* Ability to work in isolation and without supervision.
* Evidence of management of resources.
* Experience of working closely with commissioners.
* Experience of working in advanced practice e.g. physical assessment.
Skills
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
* Ability to reflect on clinical practice.
* Application of a multi-agency assessment framework.
* Ability to prioritise clinical workload.
* Advocacy for children with life-threatening or life-limiting conditions and their families.
Knowledge
* Detailed awareness and understanding of current issues in children's community nursing.
* Understanding of current professional issues in nursing and NHS.
* Understanding of service specification development.
* Application of research/evidence base to clinical practice.
Abilities
* To be a car driver.
