An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly enthusiastic, motivated and dynamic individual to join the head and neck cancer nurse specialist team, with excellent organisational and communication skills and can work both autonomously and as part of a team.
Relevant post registration experience is essential, and knowledge of head and neck nursing would be beneficial but not essential as a full training and supervision package will be tailored to meet your needs. As this is a Macmillan badged post you must have a good understanding of Macmillan priorities and their agenda including personalised care and the recovery package.
You should have degree level qualification and be committed to undertaking further study to meet service needs. Your education and development will be supported by the trust and the Macmillan team.
As an integral member of the MDT, you will be involved in developing nursing practice, strengthening and developing links across cancer networks. The head and neck MDT also has a strong research network and is involved in many research projects to improve patient care and treatment - you will be expected to support this as part of your role.
Main duties of the job
The purpose of the post is to provide expert specialist clinical nursing practice for both outpatients and inpatients (including NHS and private patients where relevant). The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) will use evidence-based clinical practice in line with current research, guidelines, and other available evidence. They will ensure that patients and their families are fully informed about their journey through the service. The CNS will liaise with other members of the Multi-disciplinary Team when required to ensure delivery of reliable high quality care.
Job responsibilities
1. Work autonomously, providing an effective nurse-led service as needs dictate.
2. Demonstrate comprehensive holistic assessment of patients utilizing a variety of advanced clinical skills, while acting as a role model, in line with the Clinical Nurse Specialist role for the service.
3. Assess and diagnose specific symptoms within your scope of practice. Advise medical and nursing staff and/or prescribe medications according to patients' requirements, writing a record in the medical notes and reassessing according to individual patient needs.
4. Provide an effective and accessible telephone advice service for patients and families and their carers.
5. Support innovations and change related to improvement of clinical services in relation to the specialty.
6. Participate in reviews of performance against Key Performance Indicators and cooperate in addressing areas of concern, in conjunction with the multi-disciplinary team.
7. Collaborate in the development and monitoring of a job plan to ensure role and personal effectiveness.

* Current NMC registration with no restrictions to practice.
* Degree level education.

* Significant experience at band 5 or above in specialist area, or relevant area with transferable skills.
