Job overview
The Role
The School is seeking to appoint a well-qualified and enthusiastic Teacher of Theology, Philosophy and Religious Studies. Although the School has a strong Christian foundation and values, it is not a requirement that the role-holder has an active personal faith. However, you must be positively supportive of the School’s active Christian ethos, and if you are suited and keen, there will be the option to also hold the role of ‘Lay Chaplain’. This role can potentially be structured as full-time or part-time.
The School is an outstanding prospect in which to teach this important subject: we are adjacent to the ancient foundations of Winchester Cathedral and Winchester College, with a wide range of services and assemblies across the year promoting a strong contextual understanding of the basics of theology and religion and an open-minded approach to learning and critical thinking.
As well as having strong subject knowledge of bible episodes, events and characters and the major global religions, you will champion the merits of the philosophical approach, passionately believing that children can meaningfully contend with the biggest questions and experiences of existence. You will powerfully advocate for pupils acquiring both the skill of managing questions where there is no right or wrong answer and the skill of formulating their own effective questions. Experience of delivering within the Philosophy for Children (P4C) model or a willingness to undertake some CPD in this area once in post is requested.
Prospective candidates should note that an ability to teach another subject within our age range may be required, and the ability/interest to do so would be an advantage. The ability to coach Games (football, rugby, and/or cricket) would also be preferable. Please could applicants include in their covering letter their preference for full-time or part-time.
The School
The Pilgrims’ School is a leading, selective day and boarding boys’ prep and double choir school in a beautiful and historic ‘city meets country’ setting in Winchester. It is a vibrant, lively school where boys aged 4 to 13 are encouraged to find their passions and nurture them, whether that be in the classroom, science lab, music room, art room, sports fields, at Forest School or beyond.
Nestled between Winchester Cathedral, Winchester College, and Wolvesey Palace, the School occupies a superb site in the historic Cathedral Close. We enjoy the use of the picturesque Wolvesey playing fields and the sporting facilities of Winchester College. With our choral foundations, the School encourages musical achievements in all its pupils but also excels in academic endeavours, sport and the arts. We enjoy an enviable local and national reputation.
