About the Role: Head of Control Strategy, Governance, Monitoring & Execution In this pivotal role, you'll support the implementation of our first line of defence model and lead a team within the Chief Controls Office. You'll be at the forefront of designing, optimising, and simplifying risk and control management within the Consumer Relationships (CR) business. By leveraging data, MI, automation, and AI, you'll drive strong customer, regulatory, and business strategic outcomes. As the leader of this newly formed team, you'll be the heartbeat of the Chief Controls Office, driving Consumer Relationships wide activity to help us operate safely and securely in ways that help our business teams move forward. Keeping our finger on the pulse of risk and control performance, identifying opportunities to continuously improve, prioritise and drive action. KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES : Leadership Excellence: Head the first line control centre of excellence, enabling Consumer Relationships to deliver its strategy safely with a focus on customer outcomes and experience. Risk & Control Transformation: lead the delivery of the transformation across Consumer Relationships, including evolving how we effectively utilise insight from business process mapping to identify gaps and opportunities to improve. Risk & Control Profile: Maintain a centralised view of the risk impacts and control improvement plans for the most material risks, ensuring high priority actions are delivered on time. Understand what and why to help our business prioritise, automate and drive change. Manage centralised risks including model, people, change, financial, climate, Legal, and tax risks. Emerging Risk Identification & Management – Identify and manage emerging and horizon risks across Consumer Relationships, enabling E2E management and timely action. Control Strategy and Standards: Design and deliver a centralised control strategy, ensuring effective risk management through process re-engineering (“controls by design”) and controls optimisation. Supported by embedded standards and data led solutions to measure control effectiveness of critical and key controls. Events Management and Read Across: Lead actions to address operational risk events and breaches. Proactively deliver read across from events, Audits, 2nd Line Risk reviews, industry developments and other triggers to enhance the control environment. Risk Management, Committee Support & Optimisation : Provide planning, support and management for Risk management activities and Committees to drive better customer outcomes. Enhance Risk Committee Effectiveness through planning and prioritisation to drive effective decision making. Ensure regulatory engagement and attestations are well managed to quality timelines. Policy Adherence: Effective deployment of policies with evidence of adherence with minimum requirements, and performance of associated controls, provide central management of policies including Personal Account Dealing (PAD) and Mandatory Training requirements. About you We’re looking someone who understands agile methodology and role models ways of working to drive growth mindset, transformation, and end to end design thinking. You will need to be customer obsessed with a deep understanding of consumer distribution and products/propositions businesses including complex systems, applications, and processes. You should be curious and have the ability to understand our business processes to identify the risks we are facing to help design and identify control automation and optimisation opportunities; through to how we monitor these effectively. You should consider the WHAT, the WHY and HOW – to ensure we get the best solutions to balance the risk we face with how we spend our money. You will need to be people and outcome focussed to get the best out of your team and drive the wider team to success. You’ll also need the following: Existing deep operational expertise aligned to (i) Control Operation, (ii) Control Testing & Monitoring and/or (iii) Control Governance, Regulatory Engagement & Reporting with a consumer lens. Detailed knowledge of the key risks facing a large consumer business, with experience developing and implementing control strategies which mitigate operational risk appropriately whilst reducing total cost of control. Specific expertise in navigating regulatory requirements and preparing materials to have or support these conversations. To understand agile methodology and role models ways of working to drive growth mindset, transformation and end to end design thinking. A proven history of data-led control management and the practical implementation across relevant business area with a record of leading controls by design / process re-engineering, controls automation, optimisation, testing and monitoring activities. Experience in the development and implementation of a control strategy to ensure there is a clear understanding of both the design and operating effectiveness of the control environment across end-to-end business processes, including business process mapping and control gap analysis. The ability to make good and timely decisions that keep the organisation moving forward and skilfully balances difficult trade-offs with the ability to understand and assimilate different sources of data and complex information to effectively problem solve and make relevant conclusions and recommendations, with consideration to the cost of control. Comfortable demonstrating bravery and conviction to engage with senior leadership to understand long-term strategic opportunities and challenges to help support the prioritisation of appropriate actions to deliver agreed control environment objectives and outcomes. Someone who easily builds partnerships and works collaboratively with others, including Risk Owner, Control Owner and Risk Specialist to meet shared objectives. Able to work effectively with all other lines of defence and understands the different but complimentary roles.
