What you'll do
You'll become an integral part of our Environmental Investigation team. You'll collaborate with Environmental Scientists and Project Managers to scope and deliver critical investigations for the Water Industry National Environment Program (WINEP).
The main duties of this role will include:
* assisting in the design and delivery of environmental monitoring for the company's environmental investigations, focusing on water quality, ecology and hydrology
* undertaking in-field monitoring including water quality sampling and assisting with river flow and groundwater level monitoring
* ecological monitoring, including macroinvertebrate and sediment sampling, habitat, invasive non-native species, and fish surveys
* quality assurance and quality control of existing data and data collected in the field
* data analysis and dissemination of findings to the wider team
* preparation of reports to be included as part of WINEP output
* obtaining permission for access onto private land
* liaison with external stakeholders.
What you'll need
This role is an industrial placement to be completed as part of a university sandwich year. To be successful in this role you will be studying towards a BSc in an environmental or science discipline.
You will:
* have the ability to effectively plan your own workload
* have the ability to safely work alone and across teams
* have the ability to work in field and office environments
* have effective communication and presentation skills within and across teams
* be organised and efficient time management
* have a willingness to learn and develop on the job
* have a willingness to develop a good understanding of environmental issues of water abstraction, hydrology, pollution, conservation and environmental legislation
* have IT skills, including Microsoft applications
* be able to swim confidently and have a full driving licence
* have experience in data analysis and the use of R or Python as a method of statistical analysis (not essential)
* have experience using ArcMap or an equivalent GIS program (preferable).
You do not need any prior knowledge of the water industry for this role; you will be given the opportunity to complete a CIWEM-accredited 'Introduction to the Water Industry' course upon starting.
Full training, personal protective equipment and a company vehicle will also be provided throughout the course of the placement.
