About the job
Actively working with the Operations Manager in the management and maintenance of operational competencies and standards for Island Line.
Your main responsibilities will be:
* Implement safety and performance standards including legislation relevant to operational staff
* Where required carry out practical assessments, including rules examinations and other safety checks ensuring that all legal requirements are being met
* Take immediate control over safety of the line incidents and accidents with regards to drivers and signallers. Collate all relevant information, ensuring that statutory and other associated bodies are communicated with, issues are concluded in a timely manner with follow up action initiated and effected, as appropriate.
* Act as a local source of expert advice for all matters with regard to driver and signaller standards and performance
* Ensure time with your managers are undertaken in accordance with objectives.
* Actively undertake customer service duties as required
* Undertake duties as directed by the Operations Manager, Island Line
* Support Operations Manager in coordination and management of TU consultations, colleague engagement and training activity for operational staff
* Ensure all activities on and around Island Line are carried out in a safe (and increasingly safe) manner, including compliance with all appropriate safety standards and procedures.
You'll need to:
* Ensure all staff holding operational competence are fully qualified and their qualifications are current and for all activities concerned.
* Acts as an ambassador for SWR's vision and values, inspiring others to do so too. Lead and support inclusion and diversity approaches that create a shared purpose in alignment with SWR's purpose and values, supporting the creation of an inclusive culture where all individuals feel supported to work at their best.
* Coaches, and supports team members to maximise their potential and performance, encouraging their teams to reflect on how their actions drive and reflect the organisational culture.
* Take responsibility for the safety of yourself, colleagues and anyone else who could be affected by what you do, or don't do.
* Follow the rules and procedures that are applicable to the role.
* Never walk by an unsafe condition or an unsafe act without either taking action or reporting it to somebody who can take action.
* Report ideas for improving safety performance.
* Always follow the environmental rules and procedures related to the role.
* Help improve environmental performance by making sure waste is minimised and resources are used efficiently (turning off PC's and monitors at the end of each day, using the recycling facilities provided etc).
* Never walk by something that could cause an environmental incident or lead to an inefficient use of resources.
As a minimum, you will need to have:
* Must have achieved or be prepared to work towards a safety qualification, or display evidence of previous safety/audit management
* Must have 3 years train driving experience.
* Must be familiar with or prepared to learn ACMS.
* Must have or be prepared to obtain operational competencies as required.
* Good knowledge of operations, including a thorough understanding of rules, standards and instructions that are key factors for the delivery of good train service performance.
* Strong commercial focus and financially astute.
* Must have the ability to work independently or as part of a team and prioritise work adaptably.
Applicants who require a visa must have 6 months remaining at the time of their appointment. Training is full time and you must be able to commit to this.
Working pattern
On average you will be working 37 hours across 5 days per week.
Saturdays and Sundays as required plus on call cover for IslandLine.
