Deafblindness can be a devastating condition that can make daily life extremely challenging and as a result, many dual sensory impaired people become isolated. Our services can make a vital difference to their lives; enabling people to regain confidence, gain vital communication skills and re-establish social connections.
Summary of Service:
Working with vulnerable adults as a Guide Communicator in our services you will enable the people you are working with to live as full and independent a life as possible. Assisting them in everyday tasks, opportunities and choices giving them as much control as possible over their own life.
Job Purpose:
As a Guide Communicator you will be required to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team of staff to support the Service User in meeting their needs and expectations. You will also be required to work on a 1:1 basis in lone worker situations to support service users within their own homes and/or participate in their chosen activities and interests. You will be committed to lifelong support and willing to undertake personal care tasks required.
Key Responsibilities
1. Day to day service delivery
1. Act as the eyes and ears of the deafblind person, relaying what is seen and heard.
2. Serve as a guide to the deafblind person, escorting them outside the home.
3. Identify and meet individual service user needs.
4. Respect and maintain the deafblind person's right to privacy and confidentiality.
5. Make phone calls, write letters or complete forms on behalf of the deafblind person.
6. Attend planning/evaluation meetings with deafblind people and relevant stakeholders.
7. Maintain proper record-keeping, including incidents and complaints.
8. Comply with the Scottish Social Services Council's Code of Practice for Social Care Workers.
2. Reflective Practice
1. Utilize knowledge and skills to meet service needs.
2. Maintain a daily record of work and activities.
3. Review service continually and notify the Manager of any required changes.
4. Involve service users and staff in service evaluation.
3. Communication
1. Provide access to information/services through preferred communication methods.
2. Ensure deafblind persons receive full information to make informed decisions.
3. Establish and maintain effective communication partnerships.
4. Submit reports and timesheets weekly to the Operations manager.
4. Personal and professional development
1. Complete mandatory and service-specific training.
2. Attend practice-based support sessions and supervision meetings.
3. Support performance management through supervision and development plans.
4. Maintain registration with relevant bodies.
5. Other requirements
1. Be accountable for personal and professional development.
2. Safeguard and promote the rights and welfare of service users.
3. Act in accordance with the SSSC Codes of Practice and company policies.
4. Undertake other duties as requested by management.

Essential
1. Education/Qualifications
1. Must be in a position to gain qualification as determined by the SSSC.
2. Experience/Understanding
1. Evidence of a desire to work in a support role.
2. Demonstrate working knowledge of current statutory requirements.
3. Skills and Abilities
1. Ability to work with stakeholders.
2. Ability to give clear and concise reports.
3. Ability to manage and maintain accurate records.
4. Ability to assess and manage risk.
5. Ability to problem solve and think creatively.
6. Ability to work flexible hours.
7. IT skills i.e. Microsoft Word and Excel.
Additional Requirements
A commitment to complete all agreed training within 1 year.
Desirable
1. Education/Qualifications
1. SVQ Level 2 (Adult Services) Social Care or equivalent.
2. Additional
1. Hold a full driving licence.
2. Food Hygiene certificate.
3. Ability to communicate through signing.
Holidays: 29 days annual leave inclusive of 8 statutory days (pro-rata for part time).
Probationary period: 6 months.
