The Architectural Director is a pivotal leadership role responsible for overseeing the strategic, operational, and creative direction of the architectural practice. This individual will drive business growth, ensure design excellence, and foster a collaborative and innovative workplace culture. The Architectural Director will act as a key liaison between clients, senior leadership, and the architectural team to deliver high-quality projects aligned with the firm's vision and objectives.
The Practice is part of a wider Group of construction companies, and the role will work closely and collaboratively alongside the team.
Key Responsibilities
1. Define and execute the strategic vision for the practice, aligning it with overall Group business objectives.
2. Provide strong leadership to architects and design teams, ensuring alignment with the Group’s goals and values.
3. Foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, and professional growth within the team.
4. Identify and capitalise on emerging market trends, technologies, and opportunities to drive the firm's growth.
5. Operational Management
6. Oversee day-to-day operations, ensuring projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards.
7. Develop and implement efficient workflows, processes, and systems to optimise team productivity and project delivery whilst working collaboratively and respectfully with the Senior Leadership Team with the Group.
8. Manage resource allocation, staffing, and team performance, ensuring operational efficiency.
9. Establish and maintain compliance with industry standards, regulations, and best practices.
10. Business Development
11. Build and maintain strong relationships with existing and potential clients to expand the firm's portfolio.
12. Lead the preparation of proposals, bids, and presentations to secure new business opportunities.
13. Represent the firm at industry events, conferences, and networking functions to enhance its visibility and reputation.
14. Collaborate with marketing teams to create strategies that position the firm as a leader in architectural design.
15. Champion design quality and innovation across all projects.
16. Provide guidance and mentorship to design teams, ensuring consistency and creativity in project delivery.
17. Review and critique designs to align them with client expectations, firm standards, sustainability goals and buildability.
18. Stay abreast of advancements in architecture, materials, and sustainable practices to integrate cutting-edge solutions.
19. Manage the practice's financial performance, including budgeting, forecasting, and profitability analysis.
20. Ensure project budgets and fee structures are competitive and align with the firm’s financial objectives.
21. Monitor financial metrics and provide regular updates to senior leadership.
Qualifications & Skills
1. Master’s degree in Architecture (MArch)
2. Professional license in Architecture (ARB)
3. Minimum of 10 years of experience in architecture, with at least 5 years in a senior management or leadership role.
4. Proven track record of delivering high-profile architectural projects across various sectors.
5. Exceptional leadership and team management skills.
6. Strong business acumen with the ability to balance creative vision with operational and financial objectives.
7. Expertise in project management, resource allocation, and client relationship management.
8. Outstanding communication, negotiation, and presentation skills.
9. Expertise in architectural design software (principally AutoCAD, secondarily SketchUp, Revit, Rhino and similar) and familiarity with emerging digital tools.
10. Knowledge of sustainable design principles and regulatory frameworks.
