About the role Civica builds products and technologies that empower the public sector to serve citizens around the world. Our solutions are widely used across Government, Housing, Transport, Education, and Healthcare sectors in the UK and abroad. We’re looking for an Engineering Manager to join our team. Using your technical and leadership expertise, you will lead a diverse team of software engineers to deliver one of Civica’s flagship products. You will be responsible for technical direction, delivery, and execution. This role is ideal for someone who not only excels at leadership, but also embraces hands-on technical work. Key responsibilities Recruit, mentor, and retain top engineering talent. Work closely with the Senior Engineering Manager to deliver strategic objectives and ensure project goals align with the broader technology roadmap. Conduct regular one-to-ones and performance reviews to foster career growth Oversee the software development lifecycle, ensuring that your team produces high-quality solutions. Establish and oversee engineering best practices and coding standards. Collaborate with principal engineers to maintain a technical roadmap and ensure alignment with product goals. Partner with Technical Product Managers to shape the product vision and define technical requirements. Own and champion agile methodologies (e.g. Scrum or Kanban), ensuring continual improvement, and effective collaboration. Taking an active role in technical discussions, architecture decisions, and code reviews to ensure solutions meet Civica’s technical standards. Requirements Proven experience leading engineering teams building critical software systems. Strong ability to bridge technical and business conversations, facilitating effective communication and decision making. Familiarity with modern engineering practices such as shift-left testing, continuous delivery, and security-by-design. Comfortable working in an environment that emphasises DevOps culture, including CI/CD pipelines and rapid iteration. Familiarity with agile practices, including sprint planning, retrospectives, and continuous integration/deployment. Ability to define and track performance metrics (e.g., velocity, quality, reliability) and use insights from these metrics to drive continuous improvement and innovation. Understanding of security best practices and regulatory compliance requirements, particularly relevant to public sector software.
