As the Creative Lead Designer you are integral in managing the process of laboratory and controlled environments fit out projects from initial brief through to successful completion. With your previous experience and knowledge in life sciences/lab design, you will be a real asset to this team.
Playing a specialised role, you will have a focus on designing functional, safe, and aesthetically appropriate laboratory environments.
Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities:
Design and Space Planning:
Meet with clients to understand their needs, provide design consultations, and develop tailored solutions
Create functional and aesthetic designs for laboratory interiors with operational efficiency and safety compliance in mind
Develop zones for various lab activities ensuring smooth circulation paths
Lead Design pitches and presentations to clients and stakeholders
Design with flexibility in mind to allow for future changes Collaboration:
Work closely with Scientists, Lab Managers, and other stakeholders to ensure lab design integrates technical systems and meets client needs
Coordinate with Technical teams (Architects, Engineers, Technical Services Managers) to integrate systems like HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and gas supplies, without compromising aesthetics or functionality
Work closely with the Sales team to develop winning strategies
Collaborate with construction teams to ensure design integrity throughout the project lifecycle
Liaise with suppliers and vendors to source materials and equipment, adhering to the design vision Material Selection:
Select durable, safe and easy-to-maintain materials that balance functionality and aesthetics
Ensure materials meet health and safety regulations Ergonomics and User-Centric Design:
Design ergonomic workstations, ensuring comfort and efficiency
Ensure the design adheres to accessibility standards
Implement appropriate lighting solutions, adhering to energy efficiency standards Technical Systems Integration:
Plan for lab-specific equipment, considering technical and spatial requirements
Plan for the routing and access of utilities
Address acoustic control through materials and design to minimise noise pollution Regulatory Compliance:
Ensure the design complies with Health and Safety regulations
Adhere to industry-specific standards (ISO certifications, OSHA guidelines, and other local regulations)
Design controlled environments, such as cleanrooms and containment areas Sustainability:
Incorporate sustainable materials and energy-efficient systems to create eco-friendly labs that may qualify for certifications such as LEED
Design spaces for effective segregation, storage and disposal of laboratory waste
Optimise natural light, airflow and energy-efficient systems into the design Furniture and Equipment Selection:
Source or design custom furniture solutions
Design and specific storage units for things such as chemicals, samples, and equipment
Use modular furniture systems to accommodate future changes Project Coordination:
Work within budget constraints
Ensure design milestones align with the project schedule, coordinating with relevant stakeholders
Conduct site visits to ensure design accuracy and address any emerging issues Documentation:
Prepare design proposals, mood boards, 3D rendering for client approval
Provide technical drawings and detailed specifications for relevant teams
About You:
Experience: 4+ years’ experience in preferably laboratory design (other technical project experience such as healthcare considered)
Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of lab design standards, such as HVAC, and cleanroom design principles
Softwares: AutoCAD, Revit, SketchUp, Adobe Creative Suite
Presentation: Experience in pitching design concepts to clients with strong communication skills
Problem-Solver: Ability to think critically and provide creative solutions to design challenges
Attention to Detail: Strong eye for detail and a high commitment to delivering high-quality work
Multiple Project Management: Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines Remuneration and Benefits:
Salary (Dependent on experience, starting at a basic of £75K upwards)
