Diocesan Accounting Trainee
How can you help grow the Kingdom of God in Llandaff? This is an exciting time in our diocese, as we embed our vision of Faith Matters which aims to transform lives through faith, education and social justice. Llandaff is one of six dioceses in the Church in Wales and covers much of South Wales.
As part of this vision we have started a new service, to support churches across the Diocese by providing a book-keeping and accounting service, free at the point of use. This service has been rolled out to five Ministry Areas and the plan is to roll it out across the whole of the Diocese in the coming year. To support this growth we are seeking to recruit a Diocesan Accounting Trainee. Dependant on the candidate this may be a formal apprenticeship role, with associated training support for a professional qualification, likely to be AAT.
The person that we are looking for will
Have a good understanding of the ethos of the Church in Wales
Be able to thrive in a changing environment, particularly as we roll out this service and engage with volunteers across the Diocese
Be a team player, able to engage with colleagues within the Diocesan Finance function and also with volunteer Treasurers from across the Diocese
Be disciplined and organised in their work
We have initially been offering a core bookkeeping and accounting service, but we expect that in time we will add other services, both accounting and administrative. The role can be expected to expand as this develops.

Background and Purpose of Post
Llandaff Diocese have launched a book-keeping and accounting service to the Ministry Areas (MAs) across the Diocese. So far five Ministry Areas have been taken on, with the potential for a further fifteen in due course. This role is to provide back office support to the Diocesan Finance Officer.
Full training will be given to enable the DAT to develop their bookkeeping and accounting skills. Dependent on the applicant, this may be an apprenticeship role with support given for training for formal qualifications, likely to be AAT
The DAT will receive accounting data from individual churches and Ministry Areas, validate the data and input it into the accounting system My Fund Accounting (MFA). They will work with the Lead Treasurers and Treasurers to ensure timely and accurate submission of the accounting data.
The DAT will produce accurate and timely monthly finance reports for review by the DFO before submission to the Ministry Area Lead Treasurers
The DAT may also be called on from time-to-time to assist in other accounting and reporting tasks
In addition to the core book-keeping service, the service is expected to expand to provide other financial and administrative support, such as Gift Aid management, payroll, budget management or payment processing. This will evolve as the core service matures and provide opportunities for growth and the development of new skills.
The role will initially be office-based, but in time may include visits to Ministry Areas across the Diocese
Key Duties
Book-keeping Service
Under the supervision and leadership of the Diocesan Finance Officer (DFO), assist in the efficient provision of the book-keeping service for Ministry Areas
Ensure that bookkeeping and accounting processes are followed in a timely manner by Ministry Area Treasurers, liaising with them as necessary
Input financial data from the MAs into MFA
Maintain the My Fund Accounting (MFA) ledgers, including ensuring that all individual accounts are reconciled at all times
Run reports from MFA for the production of standard monthly accounts.
Produce timely and accurate monthly accounts for Ministry Areas using standard Excel templates. Where budgets have been put in place by the Ministry Areas, produce monthly budget reports
As requested, produce ad hoc financial reports for MAs, or for the Diocese or Province
Assist the Diocesan Finance Officer in the production of timely and accurate Annual Financial Accounts for the Ministry Areas, in accordance with the Charity SORP
Support Independent Examiners, providing information and addressing questions arising from their examinations
Other
As the service matures, provide support in the development and implementation of additional services, such as: Gift Aid management; payment processing and bank account management; payroll; budgeting etc.
Other as directed by the DFO or DFAO
