Type of contract: Permanent Full Time Rank/Grade: Detective Constable (Substantive) Directorate/Department: Specialist Operations – Major Crime Team Vetting level required: MV/SC Location: Bishopsgate Police Station Salary: National Pay Scales Statement of expectation for the role: An exciting opportunity has arisen for Detective Constables within the Major Crime Team (MCT) currently based at Bishopsgate Police Station, with a view to move to brand new premises on Fleet Street in 2027. If successful you will form part of the team responsible for investigating the crimes that cause the most harm to those living and visiting the City of London. The role is both challenging and rewarding. Pre-requisites include team work, high quality communication, commitment, and computer skills. Applications are sought from Detectives who can demonstrate their experience of investigating serious and complex cases. Core working hours are Monday to Friday 8am to 4pm, however there will be a need on occasion for flexibility. On some occasions there is a requirement to work long hours, sometimes at short notice. Successful applicants will work to a Detective Sergeant and have the opportunity to receive enhanced training in order to effectively carry out the role. As part of the training provided, successful applicants will be HOLMES trained and therefore flexibility would be required to work with the Major Incident Room (MIR). Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate in interview their ability to be able to work efficiently independently as well as amongst a team, and an ability to develop themselves as well as their colleagues in specialist investigations. The Major Crime Team: We are supported by one Detective Chief Inspector (SIO) alongside one Detective Inspector (D/SIO) and two Detective Sergeants, who in the most serious of investigations will perform the role of case officer. The MCT is a force-wide resource at the forefront of Major Investigations involving high risk facets of policing, including homicides, attempted murders, manslaughter, road traffic deaths, armed robberies (with a firearm), alongside other serious and complex investigations as directed by the Senior Leadership Team. To be successful in this position, you will need excellent communication skills, enthusiasm and energy to work within a team environment. You must be able to work effectively under pressure with minimal supervision. An ability to work in a changing environment will make you an ideal candidate. Principal duties and responsibilities: You will work as part of a team on complex, large scale, and high-profile investigations in accordance with investigation policy and relevant legal requirements. Undertake roles including, but not limited to, officer in the case, disclosure officer, exhibits officer, CCTV officer, witness coordinator and enquiry officer. Carry out risk assessments, arrests, searches, custody procedure, complex interviews of suspect and witnesses. Complete reviews of digital media and communications data. Accurately assess the nature of a crime scene and act promptly to preserve it, ensuring that accurate records are maintained, and appropriate personnel are tasked and briefed. Prepare case files and effectively engage with the CPS and the criminal justice process. Essential Criteria: PIP2 - The candidate must be an accredited Detective Constable along with good knowledge and experience of serious and complex case work with an understanding and working knowledge of legislation including PACE, CPIA, RIPA and IPA. Enthusiasm and an ability to work under pressure and deal with risk. Excellent oral and written communication skills. A professional curiosity The ability to engage colleagues, witnesses, victims and partners both professionally and compassionately, in a patient and impartial manner. Flexibility and resilience in their approach to work. The candidate must be vetted to or willing to undertake vetting to SC. Desirable Criteria: Digital Media Investigator (DMI) Advanced Disclosure Officer Exhibits Officer Tier 3 Interviewer or Tier 5 Interview Advisor.
