Laboratory Technician in Wound Dressing Development
HYFACOL Limited
Are you an ambitious laboratory technician looking for your next challenge? Do you have expertise in the aseptic manufacture of medical devices and quality control? Do you want to further your career in wound dressings development and clinical translation?
HYFACOL Limited is a University of Leeds spin-out company set up to commercialise a patented Collagen Manufacturing Technology, developed jointly between the Clothworkers’ Centre for Textile Materials Innovation for Healthcare (CCTMIH) and the School of Dentistry. HYFACOL’s academic founders are world-leaders in Healthcare Biomaterials, and this role offers an excellent opportunity for career development.
Working in a multi-disciplinary team, you will manufacture, test and package a new wound dressing prototype that has been developed and patented by the University of Leeds and is due to undergo clinical trial evaluation in Q1-Q2 2025. You will conduct prototype manufacture in aseptic conditions and assist with the prototype testing of physical properties, packaging, and sterilisation for clinical trial testing. Underpinned by the research team at HYFACOL, you will engage with external laboratories and suppliers to plan the prototype manufacture according to the project objectives and timeframes, and contribute to the development of back-up plans for the successful delivery of projects.
With expertise in clinically-approved polymers and medical device manufacture, you will have a proven ability to work effectively as part of a collaborative team and independently.
What does the role entail?
As a Laboratory Technician, your main duties will include:
1. Working with and in support of the company directors and the research team to ensure systematic aseptic manufacture, testing and regulatory compliance of the prototype under development.
2. Liaising with certified sterilisation laboratories and suppliers to achieve timely delivery of raw materials and prototype manufacture.
3. Manufacturing collagen-based wound dressings (including the synthesis of hydrogels, collagen functionalisation, UV-induced crosslinking).
4. Collecting, labelling and packaging samples in sterile pouches.
5. Conducting experiments in aseptic conditions (Laminar Flow hoods, LAF).
6. Cleaning LAFs and periodically checking the levels of pathogen contamination inside the LAF.
7. Characterising manufactured prototypes (degree of functionalisation, swelling properties, gel content, mechanical properties, endotoxin load, chemical structure).
8. Ensuring instruments and glassware are sterilised prior to prototype manufacture.
9. Maintaining a clean and safe laboratory environment according to environmental and health standards.
10. Ordering and maintaining stock and resources.
11. Reporting experiment and test results to the Research Scientist and Chief Scientific Officer.
What will you bring to the role?
As a Laboratory Technician, you will have:
1. A first degree related to biomaterials chemistry, biomedical engineering, or a closely allied discipline.
2. A background in physical and chemical testing of materials.
3. Experience of conducting experiments involving wet chemistry.
4. Good time management and planning skills.
5. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
6. A proven ability to work well both individually and as part of a team.
