Senior Design Manager Tunnels & Shafts Role Overview The Senior Design Manager will lead the Stage 5 design and be responsible for leading and co-ordination all design and disciplines within the scope, facilitate the delivery of all Stage 5 design to the company Design Vision, ensuring the design is technically assured, delivered to programme and coordinated between design disciplines. You will lead a team of Design Managers who will have asset specific and package responsibilities, and you will also be responsible for the management of change control, have reporting responsibilities on progress and issues associated with the Stage 5 design, and collaborating closely with all relevant disciplines within the company and the wider project, as well as the various 3rd party suppliers/designers. This role will report to the Design Lead and will also act as the Design Lead’s deputy and assist where required with any detailed design (Stage 4) tasks and close out. Candidates for the role must have a proven experience of large-scale civil engineering projects. Your previous/background experience will likely have been within Design and Engineering Project Management. You will have an in-depth knowledge of construction techniques and processes across shafts and head house structures, above and below ground with focus on shaft fit-out and architectural design, with an appreciation of both temporary and permanent MEP as well as rail systems activities. Furthermore, you will have a practical and working knowledge of the processes and procedures for the delivery of works with emphasis on safety, quality, assurance and programme. Knowledge and experience are the key attributes for the role along with strong interpersonal organizational team working skills and the ability to communicate clearly and effectively. The Senior Design Manager will be responsible for: • Leading the Design team incl. Design Managers and Design Assurance Coordinators in relation to the assets requiring Stage 5 design development • Management of all Design activities related to the shaft fit out incl. blockwork, fire-proofing, steelwork, doors, hatches, drainage, etc. and architectural design of the shafts and headhouses incl. misc. steel works, façade/cladding, roofing systems. You will also be involved with the integration of MEP systems. • Liaison with design consultant, MEP team, Design Integrator, Engineering team, Construction team, QA team, Commercial team, Planning team and Cost control to provide relevant design input • Responsible for raising Non-Conformance Records (NCRs) and associated Defects as required, and assisting with the resolutions to ensure a ‘best for project’ solution is sought. • Ensure that relevant design and engineering, interface and temporary works management plans and assurance plans are adhered to, within area of responsibility • Be familiar with, and demonstrate commitment to the requirements of the Health & Safety and Environmental Policies • Reporting: management and monitoring of the Stage 5 design progress, and reporting these to the Design Lead, Senior Management and the client in the regular reporting meetings as required. • Management (i.e. programme, contract, scope, progress, change, compliance, governance etc.) of the Stage 5 design including specialist designers and subcontractors responsible for their own design elements. • Ensuring that design accommodates designing for maintenance and health, safety and welfare during construction and in-use (Operation and Maintenance etc). • Ensure that design change is managed, monitored and the implications (including derogations/departures) are assessed and authorised, as appropriate. • Ensure that design risks are recorded, communicated and mitigated wherever possible. • Ensure the completion of constructability reviews • Identify and implement opportunities for optimization of project programme • Ensure that any proposed changes in materials or construction are checked against the original design specifications and appropriate action taken. Ensuring the design is compliant and in line with requirements. • Ensuring compliance with the project processes and procedures. • Review Technical Queries (TQs)/RFIs, FCDs and NCRs as required, as well as Material Compliance Records (MCRs). • Ensuring the required Lead Designer duties are undertaken as delegated and required by the project. • Management of Design integration and change control during construction • Promote best practice in safety management through application of risk assessment and ensuring CDM 2015 regulations are considered in the design and challenging the designer when required. • Fostering Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) in the Design teams and ensuring collaborative working, the right behaviours and culture within the team and with subcontractors, suppliers and any other third parties. Required Qualifications & Skills • Educated to degree level or higher (preferably BEng or higher (MEng, MSc) and hold relevant professional qualification. • Thorough knowledge of construction of shafts and headhouses with focus on fit-out and architectural elements and interfaces with MEP. • Experience of large complex projects where involvement with multi-discipline integration was required. • Extensive technical knowledge of construction techniques and best practices. • Thorough understanding and application of the CDM Regulations 2015. • Sustained Continuing Professional Development. • Experience in project-based design and management across all project stages. • Strong understanding of Engineering Principles and extensive technical knowledge of construction techniques and best practices • Experience of managing the challenges associated with multi-disciplinary teams. • Understanding of digital engineering in design and construction phases and of using the Digital Plan of Works. • Strong communication and leadership skills.
