The Role
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a part-time School Nurse at the School. The Medical Centre provides first aid and emergency care and treatment, health care and support to all members of the school community. The purpose of the role is to provide a high standard of service within NMC guidelines to pupils, staff, and visitors while on the school site, as well as providing health advice and managing pupils with chronic medical conditions. Medical cover for weekday and Saturday sporting fixtures is also provided by the School Nurses.
The School Nurses work closely with the Assistant Head (pupil welfare), the School's counsellors, and the Section Heads overseeing the three pastoral units (Lower School, Middle School, and Sixth Form). They also collaborate with the Head of Personal Social and Health Education on health education issues.
Key Responsibilities
1. Organising and running nurse drop-in health and welfare clinics for pupils and staff.
2. Providing first aid (physical and mental health) and emergency care and treatment as necessary, including pitch side/sports emergency first aid.
3. Providing wellbeing and mental health support, and signposting to support services as appropriate, in conjunction with the Assistant Head (pupil welfare).
4. Ensuring pupil care plans are followed as required (e.g., cases of asthma, epilepsy, diabetes, and anaphylaxis).
5. Operating procedures for the control of infectious diseases as required.
6. Administering medications under protocol and keeping accurate dispensing records.
7. Maintaining the stock in the treatment room and first aid kits, ensuring hygiene and tidiness.
8. Maintaining all School medical records accurately, confidentially, and securely.
9. Keeping up-to-date with professional developments through the Royal College of Nursing and the Independent Schools Nurse Clinical Supervision Group.
10. Adhering to the NMC code of professional conduct and being conversant with the scope of professional practice and other NMC advisory papers.
11. Ensuring effective handover between Nursing shifts as required.
Skills and Qualifications
1. A professional nursing qualification resulting in the applicant being a registered nurse on the NMC register, with at least 2 years post-registration experience.
2. Good communication skills with the ability to produce clear, concise, timely, and appropriate oral and written communications, maintaining confidentiality.
3. Sensitivity - the ability to listen well and understand others' needs and perspectives.
4. Self-motivation - the applicant will need to be conscientious and willing to show initiative.
5. Teamwork - the School Nurses will work closely with pupils, teachers, and non-teaching staff to provide the highest levels of care. Co-operation, reliability, and flexibility are important for effective teamwork.
6. Professional development - the School is keen to ensure that its Nurses receive appropriate professional development to remain effective practitioners.
