Children and Young Person's Mental Health Specialist Nurse
At West Suffolk Hospital, we are committed to ensuring that the mental health needs of patients are understood and supported when receiving care within our services.
We recognize that to enable staff to provide care for people who have additional complex mental health needs, there is a need to enhance the specialism within our services to include additional mental health professionals within our workforce.
We are excited to advertise a Band 7 post for a mental health professional who has experience working with children and young people. The post holder will work alongside the Head of Mental Health, safeguarding team, and children's teams across West Suffolk Hospital, including outpatient areas, to build a provision that positively impacts the health outcomes of children and young people.
A pivotal aspect of this post will be direct interventions with young people who have been admitted to West Suffolk Hospital and require support for their mental health alongside physical health needs. The successful applicant will build relationships with internal and external teams to develop effective and therapeutic pathways of care, mindful of the impact of different factors on all children's mental health and wellbeing.
Main Duties of the Job
1. Provide clinical leadership and training on the delivery of care for children and young people in West Suffolk Hospital who have mental health needs.
2. Develop care packages and programs for young people with complex mental health needs, including self-harm or eating disorders, involving multi-agency input.
3. Communicate complex and sensitive information to children, young people, and their families, providing empathy and reassurance.
4. Review children and young people presenting in the Emergency Department (ED) or ambulatory areas with mental health needs assessed by the Psychiatric Liaison team and ensure appropriate risk assessments are completed.
5. Ensure safe and effective care is provided, including an inpatient plan of care, risk assessment, and discharge care plan.

Job Responsibilities
1. Provide specialist assessment by applying appropriate, evidence-based assessment approaches.
2. Advise on the care of children and young people with mental health needs and their families.
3. Onward referral and liaison with appropriate community specialist services.
4. Support community teams in reaching into the hospital for patients who are open to them or if a new referral has been made.
Person Specification
Education & Qualification
* Registered Nurse (RMN)
* Knowledge of CYP acquired through post-registration education.
* Additional nursing qualification.
* Degree/Masters level qualification relevant to CYP.
* Relevant teaching qualification.
Experience & Knowledge
* Post-registration clinical experience working with children and young people with mental health needs in various settings.
* Experience of recent involvement in practice/service development.
* Experience of working with groups and individuals in various roles and settings.
* Demonstrated experience of working as an autonomous practitioner.
* Demonstrated ability to lead and manage services.
* Experience of professional supervision of staff.
* Experience of audit/evaluating clinical practice.
