About Us
The Hand Engravers Association of Great Britain was founded in 2007 and is now a small Charitable Incorporated Organisation governed by a Board of Trustees, with the support of two part-time, freelance staff.
We are a membership organisation with around 120 members, and work to promote and preserve the skills of this endangered heritage craft through education, exhibitions, events and advocacy.
The Role
The Director is pivotal in the organisational and strategic management of the Hand Engravers Association, working with the Board, the Administration Manager and key stakeholders to realise charitable and organisational objectives. Whilst the successful applicant could come from any sector, an enthusiasm for heritage crafts is essential.
Objectives
The Director leads the Association to realise its key objectives:
Raise the profile of hand engraving
1. By informing the general public about this wonderful, traditional craft through exhibitions, seminars, workshops and in our own newsletter and website.
Provide education and training
2. By running a programme of short engraving courses for all skill levels.
3. Encouraging established craftsmen to pass on their skills to the next generation of hand engravers.
4. Liaising with government and funding bodies to ensure craft training is adequately supported.
5. Facilitating and supporting apprenticeships with leading engravers.
6. Arranging specialist training days, talks and demonstrations for schools and colleges.
Stimulate debate and generate new ideas
7. By providing a platform for the exchange of skills and ideas with regular meetings, workshops, social events and a regular newsletter.
Person Specification
Essential
8. At least three years experience working in a management role
9. Excellent writing and communication skills, numeracy skills and IT skills including MS Excel
10. Experience with setting up, chairing and attending online meetings (Zoom)
11. Experience of managing finances and budgets
12. Demonstrable track record of successfully raising money from trusts and foundations
13. Experience of managing Facebook and Instagram accounts for an organisation
14. Experience of liaising with a wide range of stakeholders at a senior level
15. Project and event management experience
16. Experience of engaging and managing freelancers and volunteers
17. Highly self-motivated with a flexible and proactive approach
18. Be able to work to tight deadlines with limited budgets
19. Experience of charity governance
Desirable
20. Experience of working in the heritage crafts sector
21. Experienced in updating websites
22. Experience in using Mailchimp, Eventbrite and or Jotform
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Strategic Development
23. Working with the Board of Trustees, develop a three year plan
24. Long term planning and annual budget setting in collaboration with the Board to inform future programming
25. Identify, respond and pursue opportunities for partnerships that will help the charity to achieve its objectives
26. Develop initiatives and projects in furtherance of the Associations objectives
Income Generation
27. Develop an annual fundraising strategy, liaising with the Hon. Treasurer
28. Draft and send grant applications
29. Liaise with existing grant providers, providing reports and enabling visits
30. With the Patrons sub-committee, identify potential Patrons, cultivate and convert prospects, liaise with existing Patrons encouraging renewal of patronage
31. Draft, update and publish Patron Packs providing background information about the Association and incorporate the case for support
32. Commission the production of the annual Patron Pin, a small production silver badge given to all active Patrons
Governance
33. Support the work of the Board of Trustees
34. Ensure the charity is compliant with the Charities Commission and liaise with the Hon. Treasurer to appoint Independent Examiners or Auditors as necessary to file the annual return on time
35. With the support of the Administration Manager and liaising with the Chair, oversee the preparation of agendas, papers and minutes as required for Board meetings
36. Attend and present a Directors Report at each Board meeting
37. Identify the venue and plan associated content (e.g. talks and activities) for the AGM
38. Assist the Board to recruit new trustees
39. Coordinate sub-committee meetings, preparing the agenda and minutes
40. Ensure compliance with GDPR and act as the Data Protection Officer for the Association
41. With the Designated Safeguarding Lead Trustee, assist the Association to include safeguarding compliance and best practice in all its activities and ethos
Membership
42. Helping maintain and increase membership numbers
43. Coordinate the membership sub-committee (chaired by a member of the Board)
Exhibitions, Event and Project Management
44. Be the lead for planning, costing, and managing events and exhibitions; organising these activities with the support of the Administration Manager
45. Identify and recruit speakers and demonstrators
46. For exhibitions, coordinate call for entries from engravers, public collections and private collectors
47. Locate and secure venues
48. Draft running order / schedule
49. Partner liaison
50. Recruit and line manage event and exhibition volunteers
51. Coordinate and be part of the panel for any competition judging
52. Ensure all events are photographed
53. Identify VIPs to invite and send personalised invitations
54. Manage project and event budgets
55. Oversee post event evaluation and thanks to volunteers, sponsors and partners
Training and Courses
56. Structure and design content for new courses, liaising with professional engravers
57. Identify and book course venues, tutors and partners
58. Encourage and support the professional development of professional engravers, widening the pool of engraving tutors
59. Encourage engraving professionals and companies to take on engraving apprentices
60. Coordinate the training sub-committee (chaired by a Board member)
Communications and Marketing
61. Develop a new Social Media strategy in conjunction with the Board and volunteers
62. With the Administration Manager, update the website on a regular basis
63. Early stage content planning and final proof reading of Association newsletters, supporting the Administration Manager
Advocacy and Networking
64. Represent the Hand Engravers Association as appropriate with the press and media to help raise the profile of the charity
65. Make public announcements and presentations at events and online as required to represent the charity
66. Attend events and network on behalf of the charity e.g. exhibitions, awards evenings
67. Attend and contribute to roundtable events and discussion panels on behalf of the Association
68. Submit applications to put forward engravers and / or Association members for awards e.g. Heritage Crafts Awards
69. Write letters of support for members applications e.g. QEST Scholarships
Contract
Offered initially as a 12-month freelance contract with a three month probationary period at a rate of £20-25/hr (dependent on experience).
The chosen candidate will be responsible for their respective tax and NI.
Number of Days Work
35 hours per month - to be worked mainly during office hours, but with occasional weekend and evening events and activities
Location
Work from home but within commutable distance to London. Includes occasional travel in the UK to support face to face events (eg Board meetings, AGM, courses and workshops, networking meetings, events and exhibitions). Reasonable travel expenses can be reimbursed and accommodation expenses where necessary for work outside of London.
