Job summary
We are recruiting a Specialist Dietitian to join our oncology team where you will support Head & Neck and Upper GI oncology patients, in both an inpatient and outpatient setting. You'll be joining a friendly team which includes specialist dietitians and a dietetic assistant.
This post requires someone who is enthusiastic, flexible and able to work with and influence the MDT while providing a high-quality service to patients.
You'll be part of our wider department where you will be supported to develop your skills and knowledge to become an autonomous Band 6 practitioner. Our department covers a range of adult and paediatric specialities, and includes Dietitians, Associate Practitioners and Dietetic Assistants.

Main duties of the job
The post-holder will work within our established H&N and UGI oncology dietetic teams, providing support to both inpatients and outpatients undergoing cancer treatment. You will have a varied caseload and will work within several MDTs.
Your responsibilities will include:
* Providing expert, evidence based nutritional support and dietary education for oncology patients
* Prioritisation and organisation of caseloads
* Research and audit
* Mentoring & supervising junior Dietitians, Dietetic practitioners and assistants, Apprentices and students
* Involvement or leading projects to support departmental improvement
You will be encouraged and supported in your CPD, and as you progress in the role, we'll want you to share your knowledge with the wider department and other healthcare professionals, helping to promote excellence.

Job description Job responsibilities:
1. To act as an independent advanced practitioner and be professionally and legally accountable and take responsibility for all aspects of own specialist clinical caseload.
2. To work independently to undertake nutritional assessments and calculate nutritional requirements of patients with complex conditions using anthropometry.
3. To communicate evidence based nutritional and dietary advice in an understandable form.
4. To use highly developed communication and informal counselling skills such as reflective listening, open questioning, empathy, explanation and reassurance to communicate dietary intervention to patients and carers.
5. To gain valid consent to treatment and negotiate change with patients by breaking down barriers, using motivational skills, to enable them to achieve dietary targets set.
6. To devise, monitor and review complex nutritional care plans against outcome measures taking into account social, psychological, cognitive, behavioural and cultural needs, as well as taking into account the needs of the carer and adjust care plan to facilitate achievement of goals.
7. To work in an often-stressful environment of looking after patients with a terminal illness and helping support the patient and carers through the emotional responsibility this can entail.

Person Specification Qualifications Essential:
* BSc Nutrition & Dietetics or equivalent
* Current HPC registration in Dietetics
Experience Essential:
* Significant post registration experience, some of which should be in the specialist area
