ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
What is the role? As a member of the team, you will provide a positive role model for the rest of the team and our children in their day to day lives, championing their needs and advocating for their best interests. You will be therapeutic, curious, patient, and empathetic in your approach and play a key part in upholding our culture and ethos within the home.
1. Encouraging engagement with education and highlighting the future benefits of this.
2. Teaching and role modelling emotional intelligence and social skills.
3. Providing opportunities to build relationships with peers and family.
4. Supporting access to extracurricular activities and hobbies.
5. Encouraging physical and mental well-being to support a healthy lifestyle.
6. Building positive relationships with the children who may initially be resistant to this and having the resilience to remain committed.
7. Providing a safe space for children experiencing distress and displaying trauma responses.
8. Creating lifelong memories for and with our children that they take with them into adulthood.
9. Assisting in the smooth running of the home, being part of a multidisciplinary team. Promoting a warm, nurturing, safe and therapeutic environment.
10. Knowing and following the complaints procedures reporting complaints or untoward occurrences to management, be it from the public, members of the team or children.
11. Recognising the needs of the home provided by adopting a flexible attitude to work routines and shift patterns.
12. Liaising with management and colleagues regarding issues within the home. Updating on progress or difficulties in relation to adults or children and to advise if management intervention is needed.
13. Giving support and advice to less experienced colleagues when the need arises, especially new team members.
14. Having the ability to communicate clearly, orally, written and IT.
15. Knowing, understanding, following and promoting the home’s anti-discriminatory practice procedures.
16. Liaising with family and other agencies to gather information to assist in assessing the needs of children. Discussing with them the philosophy of the home.
17. Providing a stimulating environment for children and participating in their activities.
18. Knowing, using and promoting the home’s child protection procedures at all times; developing a good awareness of child protection issues, assessing and recording risk. Reporting any child protection issues. Protecting each child and the group by providing supervision and control appropriate to their age and understanding.
19. Providing security within relationships based on respect and trust and providing appropriate boundaries.
20. Maintaining daily records.
21. Preparing and participating in care plans and reviews on children and producing reports for reviews, court etc.
22. Preparing individual risk assessment and placement plans for children.
23. Ensuring an atmosphere of safety for all concerned, where the child is fully aware that the adults are there to comfort them using good communication skills and relationships.
24. Raising any concerns with the Registered Manager as appropriate.
25. Ensuring all policies and procedures, as well as risk assessments, are always adhered to.
26. Ensuring that all staff are familiar with and follow Local Authority Child Protection Procedures and Families for Children Residential Services ‘Safer Caring and Child Protection Procedures’.
27. Reporting immediately to the Registered Manager any issues regarding Child Protection matters.
28. Ensuring that all staff are familiar with Policies and Guidance Notes regarding the care of children, as well as subsequent guidance.
Qualifications:
- L3 Residential Childcare or equivalent (desirable)
Experience:
* Minimum 12 months Experience working in childcare settings
* Ability to drive
* Proficient in basic IT skills for record keeping
* Excellent communication skills to interact effectively with clients and their families
