Who You Are You are a highly skilled and self-motivated Senior Building Control Surveyor with substantial practical experience in Building Control, including commercial and industrial work. You possess full Corporate Membership of RICS, CABE, or CIOB and have achieved LABC Level 6 Competency by assessment. Your authoritative knowledge of systems, regulations, legislation, and best practices makes you an expert in applying Building Regulation and associated legislation, including court and enforcement action. An appreciation of structures and foundation design, less traditional construction techniques, and an understanding of political considerations in a Local Authority setting are also essential. You must demonstrate strong communication and interpersonal skills to engage successfully with public, developers, other professionals, and authorities, along with proven organizational skills, ICT proficiency, and the ability to interpret architectural drawings and structural designs. A full driving license and the ability to perform site inspections, including traversing uneven ground and climbing ladders, are required. What the Job Involves The role of Senior Building Control Surveyor involves providing technical expertise and control in the administration and enforcement of the Building Act, Building Regulations, and London Building Acts within a geographical area of the Borough. You will be responsible for managing plan checks, site inspections, and ensuring compliance with Building Regulations. This includes dealing with dangerous structures, instigating emergency actions when necessary, and issuing decision notices and completion certificates. You will consult with the Fire Authority and other internal and external stakeholders, provide professional advice to developers, architects, solicitors, and customers and help promote the building control service. Additionally, you will play a leadership role by supervising and developing staff, overseeing emergency work, and acting as a professional witness in court proceedings when required. Customer service orientation and performance improvement focus are paramount in this role, which also demands collaborative work with other council teams to achieve divisional aims and targets. Your duties will include personal learning and development initiatives to improve competence in complex building work and mentoring less experienced team members.
