Step into a role that matters. Shape care where it is needed most.
We’re looking for an experienced Consultant Surgeon to join our team at The Balfour, our modern Rural General Hospital in Kirkwall. This is your chance to take on meaningful clinical responsibility, delivering general surgical in your specialty practice with being (or working towards) JAG accredited for endoscopies for our 44-bed hospital serving a population of 22,000 across 20 inhabited islands.
You’ll work at the heart of a tight-knit, adaptable clinical team where your input is valued and your impact is visible. We work closely with colleagues in NHS Grampian and Scotland’s emergency retrieval services to ensure patients get the care they need—no matter the geography.
Bring your skills. Make a difference. We’re offering:
* Flexible working: full-time, part-time or annualised hours—we’ll build a model that works for you.
* Dedicated support for study leave and ongoing skills development, including time in larger centres.
* A real chance to shape local services and lead innovation in island healthcare.
* The option to live in Orkney or commute easily with regular air and ferry links.
Orkney is regularly ranked one of the best places to live in the UK. It offers excellent schools, a strong sense of community, and a wealth of outdoor and cultural activities—from sea kayaking to internationally renowned festivals.
Make your next move one that counts. Come and be part of a service where your skills are needed, your voice is heard, and your contribution shapes care for an entire island community.
