Environmental Manager
Location: Carlisle
Salary: £55,000 - £67,000 plus car / car allowance and package negotiable dependant on experience and level of expertise.
Summary
An opportunity has arisen for an Environmental Manager to work on a £250 million substation project based in Carlisle. The project is a joint venture with two of the biggest civil engineering and energy companies in the UK and will support the replacement of major infrastructure to increase the substation's capacity.
Works include earthworks, roads, drainage, concrete structures, and piling, followed by fit-out works.
The role is site-based with one day a week working from home, and full accommodation/subsistence will be paid on site if daily travel is not viable.
Reporting to the Project Director, the Environmental Manager will take the lead in creating a culture of best practice environmental performance and excellent standards across the civil works on the substation. Responsibilities include the delivery of roads, drainage, piling, concrete structures, and earthworks.
Duties
1. Initiate and maintain systems to review and monitor compliance with BS EN ISO 14001 and other company/divisional standards.
2. Manage and oversee monitoring equipment, collecting, processing, and interpreting data (e.g., water, dust, noise, waste).
3. Manage onsite Environmental Site inspections, highlighting any bad and good practices to the relevant teams and Senior Management.
4. Ensure that the Project Environmental Management System is implemented and operated on site through a programme of checking and auditing.
5. Record and report all incidents to all relevant parties and instigate any corrective actions required.
6. Prepare monthly environmental reports for the project, including completion of company/client and divisional reporting systems data systems.
7. Regularly report progress (including achievements) against environmental compliance and environmental targets to the whole team.
8. Develop robust and comprehensive mitigation measures to deal with environmental risks, working collaboratively with the production team.
9. Produce, review, and update the Project Environmental Management Plan (EMP) and associated plans on a regular basis.
10. Develop and maintain relationships with key stakeholders and client representatives to ensure collaborative working relationships.
Person Specification
1. Significant experience with either a consulting engineer, civil engineering contractor, or a specialist environmental contractor.
2. Hold a Bachelor's degree/MSc (or equivalent) in a relevant environmental discipline.
3. Broad knowledge of all aspects of environmental design and works and impacts on third parties.
4. Knowledge of relevant UK Environment legislation and current best practice guidance.
5. Member of IEMA, ideally chartered or working towards chartered status.
