Full-Time Welfare Support Assistant – Secondary, Basingstoke, Hampshire
Are you capable and passionate enough to support students' well-being and mental health?
GSL Education are currently seeking an empathetic and dedicated individual to join a supportive secondary school in Basingstoke as a full-time Welfare Support Assistant. This vital role begins immediately, offering a competitive annual salary between £21,500 and £24,500 (Depending on Experience), and operates during term time only from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm, Monday to Friday.
The ideal candidate will bring experience from a similar role or transferable skills from youth work, social care, or pastoral support.
This role offers an exciting opportunity for an individual to be part of a supportive pastoral team, providing crucial support to students with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. You will work directly with students to help them manage challenges and create a positive and safe learning environment. Patience, empathy, and a strong commitment to improving student well-being are essential for this role.
Welfare Support Assistant Responsibilities:
* Provide on-call support to students experiencing emotional or mental health challenges throughout the school day
* Offer one-to-one and group interventions to support students with SEMH, helping them re-engage with their studies
* Collaborate with teachers, senior staff, and other support professionals to deliver effective pastoral care
* Assist in managing and resolving behavioural or emotional challenges, using de-escalation techniques when required
* Promote students' well-being by offering emotional support and building positive relationships
* Help implement individual support plans tailored to students with SEMH needs
* Encourage students to engage with school activities, promoting positive social and emotional development
* Maintain accurate records of student interactions and progress, providing regular feedback to senior staff
* Contribute to safeguarding efforts and be proactive in identifying concerns regarding student welfare
Skills & Requirements for a Welfare Support Assistant:
* Experience working as a Welfare Support Assistant or in a similar role such as a youth worker, social worker, or within a pastoral support setting
* Previous experience working with children or young people is highly desirable
* A strong understanding of SEMH and its impact on students’ learning and development
* Excellent communication skills, with the ability to build strong relationships with students and staff
* The ability to stay calm and focused in emotionally charged situations
* A proactive, empathetic approach to supporting students' welfare
* Strong organisational skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a team
* Have an updated CV (covering the last ten years, barring any unexplained gaps)
* Enhanced DBS registered on the Update Service (or willingness to apply for a new one)
