Consultant Microbiologist & Lead for Antimicrobial Stewardship

This is a full time substantive replacement post which will be based at Bedford hospital. The post holder will be joining a group of five other clinical microbiologists with the aim to provide high quality diagnostic microbiology and clinical advisory service to both acute hospitals and general practitioners in Luton & Bedfordshire.
The post holder will be the lead microbiologist for antimicrobial stewardship across the Trust, playing a key role in the Trust antimicrobial stewardship committee and working closely with antimicrobial pharmacists, patient safety leads, and representatives from all clinical service lines to promote good antimicrobial prescribing practice.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will be part of the senior laboratory management team and be expected to actively participate and support the Clinical lead in the management and the day-to-day running of the clinical laboratory.
You will be expected to share with your colleagues the daily tasks of results validation and providing clinical and infection control advice to clinical colleagues.
In your role as the antimicrobial stewardship lead, you will enjoy cross-site responsibilities and help promote good antimicrobial prescribing in line with Trust guidelines. You will be an active member of the Trust Antimicrobial Stewardship Group and participate in ward rounds to review prescribing and engage with clinical colleagues to influence prescribing.
The department is keen to promote educational events and engage with teaching and other educational activities to benefit colleagues in the department and the wider Trust.
This position also requires participation in a 1 in 6 category A on-call rota which runs from Monday to Sunday.

Person Specification
Qualifications
* Medical Degree
* FRCPath or equivalent
* MD or equivalent Higher Degree or evidence of relevant research
* Qualification in the management of antimicrobial stewardship
Registration
* Full GMC Registration with a licence to practice
* Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register via CCT (or within 6 months of receipt of CCT at time of interview) or CESR (must be on Specialist Register at time of applying)
Clinical Experience
* Excellent all-round experience of DGH work
* Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in Microbiology
* Knowledge and experience in delivering antimicrobial stewardship
* Knowledge and experience of infection prevention and control
Personal Circumstances
* Residence within 10 miles by road or up to thirty minutes travelling time of the hospital for purposes of on-call emergencies
* Fit to undertake the role with satisfactory Occupational Health clearance
* Satisfactory DBS clearance
