Specialist Leanring and Support Assitant required for a specialist setting that provides education for students aged 7 to 18 years. The pupils are taught in small groups tailored to their academic abilities and specific Special Educational Needs. Many are either approaching a return to mainstream school or preparing for post-16 placement in a mainstream college. The main site is designed to replicate a mainstream school environment, but on a smaller scale, with significantly more support. Additionally, there is a Nurture Unit for students with more complex needs, offering targeted support and care.
Duties will include:
- Supporting pupils on a one to one basis, in small groups, during classroom activities, and at lunch, break times, and unstructured/social periods.
- Accompanying pupils on school visits and outings, as appropriate.
- Working closely with the SENDCo to help develop and enhance pupils' social skills and appropriate behaviour.
- Assisting in the development, delivery, and monitoring of individualised programmes for students.
- Supporting pupils who exhibit challenging behaviours.
- Assisting in managing situations that cause anxiety or emotional responses in pupils.
- Maintaining accurate records as required by the school.
- Collaborating with teaching staff to ensure effective use of support and resources.
- Supporting the delivery of the Key Stage 2 and 3 curriculum.
- Assisting in the delivery of Key Stage 4 programmes of study.
- Participating in relevant working groups, as needed.
- Working as part of a flexible and supportive team to uphold the school's ethos.
- Attending weekly staff meetings and engaging in relevant INSET/CPD training and development events.
Candidate requirements:
- An understanding of ACES (Adverse Childhood Experiences) or how childhood trauma can impact children and adults later in life would be beneficial, though training will be provided to the successful candidate.
- Academic qualifications to at least GCSE level and professional qualifications at NVQ Level 2 or equivalent, or demonstrable competency through proven experience.
- Relevant experience in a similar educational or support role, or appropriate qualifications.
- Ability to work independently and use initiative to a high level of accuracy, maintaining clear and organised records.
- Strong time management skills, with the ability to adapt and prioritise tasks flexibly to meet the demands of the role.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a busy team.
- Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to engage with pupils, parents, and colleagues in a variety of contexts.
- Knowledge of child development and an understanding of the various ways children learn to read would be advantageous.
- Access to a vehicle and a full driving licence
