Financial Controller
Salary: £45,264 to £51,488
37 hours per week (Mon - Fri), 23 days holiday plus bank holidays
Founded in 1972 to help preserve 2,000 years of York’s history, York Archaeology is an independent educational charity. Over the last 50 years we have helped preserve the vast collection of the city’s archaeological deposits and heritage. Growing from its head office in York, York Archaeology has expanded to two further offices in Sheffield and Nottingham. Across the charity we employ over 200 people alongside the vital contributions our 200 volunteers make.
We are seeking an experienced Financial Controller to join our organisation. As Financial Controller, you will manage the finance team to accurately deliver all finance transactions (including the processing of payments to staff and suppliers), the production of management and statutory accounts and the production of meaningful management information. You will deputise for the CFO and work with Senior Management Teams and Line Managers to improve systems and efficiencies.
We require you to hold a newly-qualified first tier professional body qualification (ACCA, CIMA or ACA). Ideally you will have experience of using Sage 200 and Sage 50 Payroll.
Responsibilities will include:
* To manage the Finance team effectively in a collaborative manner that respects people’s talents, motivates and enables their development while being committed to high professional standards.
* Deputise for CFO when required.
* To assist the CFO in the production of the Annual Reports and Accounts and be main point of contact with the external auditors to ensure the smooth running of the audit process.
* To produce monthly internal management accounts and KPI’s.
* To provide analysis as requested by the Board, Executive Team, Managers, Project Managers and external advisors.
* To prepare the quarterly VAT return and other statutory returns (e.g. HMRC, Companies House, Charity Commission) as required.
* To assist users of both the financial & project accounting systems with their queries and provide support where required.
* To support the CFO in the analysis of financial risk, the appropriateness of and compliance with Standing Financial Instructions and ensuring financial risk awareness across the organization.
* To work with the CFO, Senior Management Teams, Project Managers, Line Managers and external advisors on the development and effective implementation of and compliance with systems.
* To oversee the production of the monthly payroll for salaried and hourly paid staff, including the calculation of amounts due and deductions to be taken, the timely payment of deductions to the relevant body, including pension payments, and the reporting of starters and leavers for the pension scheme.
* To prepare balance sheet control accounts at least quarterly, ensuring that discrepancies are identified and resolved in a timely manner.
* To produce a timetable for the production of monthly, quarterly and year end transactions and reports, issue to relevant staff and ensure that the timescale is met.
* To complete and submit requested questionnaires and surveys from Office for National Statistics and the Valuation Office accordingly.
* To assist in the administration and audit of grant applications.
