Description Summer Internship: Encouraging People form Ethnic Minorities to be Blood Donors: Ways to Utilise Artificial Intelligence in Thematic Analysis Are you interested in the intersection of psychology, artificial intelligence and social impact? This is a fully funded and paid summer internship, part of a five-year NIHR-funded project in collaboration with the National Health Service Blood and Transplant (NHSBT). One focus of this work is to better understand why people from ethnic minority communities are less likely to donate blood. As part of this work, we have developed and evaluated a number of co-designed and co-produced films with our co-design partner (Action on Blood: https://www.actiononblood.org/ ) and community groups. We are looking for a motivated intern to help us to evaluate these films based on the qualitative data we have collected (people's free responses to emotional reactions to the films) by extending the traditional ways of coding qualitative data using new AI-generated methods and protocols we have developed. In addition, we are using a separate AI tool that scrapes and parses the websites of Blood Collection Agencies (BCAs) to audit their level of engagement in recruiting ethnic minority donors. We would like the intern to contribute to the further development and application of this process. Start Date: 01/07/2025 End Date: 29/08/2025 Working Hours: 115 hours total over an 8-week period Pay Rate: £16.78 per hour plus holiday pay Location: School of Psychology, University of Nottingham, University Park Dress Code: Smart casual The duties will include: Coding free response text from film evaluations from samples from diverse ethnic backgrounds Revising the coding frame Using AI tool to code the free response data Explore how well human and AI coding frames align and identify differences Implementing the AI website auditing tool on several BCAs in the Global North Skills and experience required for the role: Experience working with qualitative data Experience working with community groups Experience with the NHS No prior experience with AI is required, but a strong interest in learning and applying AI-based tools is essential What you can expect to gain during this role: You will gain skills working with large-scale real-world data You will gain skills working within an interdisciplinary framework (psychologists, economists, clinicians, epidemiologists, marketing professionals and NHS staff) You will gain skills using multiple methods integrating AI and traditional approaches to qualitative data analyses Learn about various techniques such a thematic analysis, sentiment analysis and AI applications Application Instructions: Please note this is a two step application is required for this role.
