About the College/Department
The University of Derby is embarking on an exciting new chapter, and we are seeking a visionary leader to shape and launch the University of Derby Medical School. This is a unique opportunity to establish undergraduate medical education for the first time at the University and make a lasting impact on both the institution and the wider community.

About the role
This role is pivotal in shaping the future of medical education within the Medical School. The successful candidate will lead the development and approval of undergraduate medical qualifications in close collaboration with the medical school sponsor, ensuring that the curriculum is robust, innovative, and aligned with the evolving needs of the healthcare sector.
A key aspect of the role involves project managing the accreditation process, including securing approval from the General Medical Council (GMC), a critical milestone in ensuring the programme meets national regulatory standards.
Building and maintaining strong partnerships with key healthcare stakeholders—such as University Hospitals Derby and Burton, NHS England, and local GP practices—is another essential responsibility. These relationships will be vital for offering clinical placements, ensuring a practical, hands-on approach to medical education.
Additionally, the role will focus on ensuring the new medical programmes meet the highest quality standards, producing graduates with the clinical skills, knowledge, and expertise required to excel in today’s healthcare environment.
Finally, this leadership position will involve strategic planning for the Medical School, encompassing programme design, recruitment of academic staff, and the management of operational logistics, all of which are critical to the School’s successful establishment and long-term sustainability.
This role is 0.4 FTE; available as a 12 month fixed term contract. However, it is envisaged that the duration for this role could be extended in consultation with the post holder.

This role requires a leader who can take full responsibility for the professional, clinical, and academic quality of the Medical School’s programmes, ensuring they meet rigorous standards of excellence. The successful candidate will be a proven leader of people and projects, with the ability to inspire, motivate, and drive teams toward the successful delivery of strategic goals.
Additionally, they will possess strong financial and resource management skills, crucial for ensuring that the Medical School’s objectives are achieved efficiently and sustainably. Principal accountabilities
* Lead the development of the proposal to enable the delivery of undergraduate medical education and programmes in the University of Derby Medical School (in conjunction with our medical school sponsor) including successfully gaining GMC approval to be added to the list of bodies able to award a primary medical qualification (PMQ).
* Project manage and oversee the steps required by GMC to gain approval from screening to sign off.
* Work with an existing provider to replicate their medical provision as part of the initial Medical School delivery model.
* Lead on the strategic development and operational planning for all undergraduate programmes related to medical education that the Medical School will deliver.
* Lead on logistical planning for the Medical School which includes location, facilities and resource planning.
* Act as lead liaison with the GMC and other professional bodies to ensure appropriate approvals and accreditation for programmes to enable the University to award medical degrees.
* Ensure that all proposed education programmes will produce graduates that are competent practitioners with the practice skills and knowledge recognised and valued by employers.
* Develop the underpinning systems to ensure excellent student support, guidance and communication for all Medical School students.
* Represent the Medical School and University on appropriate external committees and boards to ensure appropriate representation of views.
* Develop excellent relationships with external stakeholders to ensure the proposed programmes deliver appropriate high-quality teaching.
* Make a major contribution to the strategic identification and recruitment of appropriate staff for the delivery of programmes within the Medical School.
* Work with colleagues to ensure that development programmes are designed to ensure that appointed staff retain currency and clinical credibility as appropriate.
* Develop plans to operationalise delivery of educational provision ensuring that the student experience is at the heart of all delivery.
* Develop plans for School research profile aligned to curriculum and University of Derby Research Strategy.
* Contribute to, and lead as appropriate, University strategic planning, curriculum development and quality review related to the initial establishment of the Medical School and its curriculum.
* Commitment to embedding digital/ technological advancement in healthcare into the curriculum.
* Demonstrated experience or knowledge in multi-professional learning and practice, particularly in the context of nursing and allied health professions (AHP) curricula.
* Attend and lead meetings and participate in other committees and working groups within the University and external to it as is appropriate to the role.
* Develop and manage resources in support of major research and teaching activities.
* Act as ambassador for Health, Safety and wellbeing and ensure compliance with health and safety requirements in all aspects of work.
* Carry out any other duties associated with the area to be included by the Pro Vice -Chancellor Dean, line manager or designated representative.

Qualifications
* GMC registered with a license to practice.
* Medical qualification.
* Degree or equivalent qualification.
Experience
* A current medical practitioner.
* Experience of sitting on medical boards or committees or community-based committees in the capacity of a medical expert.
* Demonstrable aptitude for strategic thinking.
* Extensively networked with an excellent track record of building and sustaining successful partnerships with multiple external partners.
* Evidence of high levels of understanding of current issues relating to healthcare and the ability to respond to these.
