The post holder would work with the physiotherapists in the management of out-patients. 75% of the work is clinically related -- the focus of this post is the rehabilitation of out-patients with orthopaedic conditions, this will be with individual patients and with groups of patients.
We have a rehabilitation gym and hydrotherapy pool onsite. You would be part of a highly trained team of gym technicians who help patients transition to mainstream exercise.
Main duties of the job
1. To work with the physiotherapy team delivering services to patients in need of rehabilitation whilst under the care of the physiotherapy department.
2. To undertake specific skilled support work to aid the rehabilitation of patients/clients in the gymnasium or hydrotherapy pool.
3. To accept patients referred by a physiotherapist and carry as own patient caseload under indirect supervision of the Physiotherapist and close mentoring from Band 4 Physiotherapy Assistant.
4. To formulate and progress intervention programmes within agreed limits relevant to knowledge/experience.
5. To work unsupervised delivering patient programmes whilst keeping the physiotherapist informed.
6. To assist therapy staff in activities related to non-direct patient/client contact, e.g. equipment maintenance, delivery and collection, clerical and administration duties.
7. To work as a member of the multi-disciplinary team alongside other agencies (e.g. cardiac rehab and proactive team etc) ensuring that effective communication and liaison takes place at all times.

Duties and Responsibilities
1. To work in a variety of settings including the department, gymnasium and hydrotherapy pool. Carrying their own clinical caseload in the physiotherapy management of specific conditions aimed at enabling the patient to regain functional goals.
2. Patients will be initially assessed by a physiotherapist. The post holder may vary the treatment within the scope of their competence without the need to refer back to the physiotherapist.
3. The post holder will inform the referrer of any significant change in the patient's condition.
4. Working within department protocols, to allocate work to Physiotherapy assistants.
5. Working within your scope of practice, to issue equipment and be responsible for educating patients and other support workers and students in the safe use of the gymnasium and other physiotherapy equipment and aids according to department protocols.
6. To encourage patients in an active approach to regaining and maintaining personal independence. This requires empathy, sensitivity, and good interpersonal skills and may require motivational skills with some patients.
7. To assist in the training of newly appointed Therapy Assistants and Technical Instructors in basic elements of patient rehabilitation, safety, and inducting them into the department and use of the hydrotherapy and gymnasium equipment.
8. To take part in the Trust appraisal and performance review programme as an appraisee. To use the provided 'Personal Development Plan' to support your own learning and development, including gathering evidence of Continual Professional Development.
9. To keep up to date on professional issues by participating in In-Service Training, and other training activities as agreed through the appraisal process.
10. To actively participate in the delivery of in-service training.
11. To undertake any other duties that might be considered appropriate by the Lead physiotherapists.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* Advanced Instructor Level 3
* Register of exercise professionals
Experience
* 5 years of exercise provision/instruction.
* Experience of work with special population groups.
Additional Criteria
* Able to develop rapport with patients/clients.
* Ability to work independently and under supervision.
* Ability to accurately summarise treatment session (both written and oral).
* Clarity in explaining ideas.
* Able to teach new skills to people.
* Good hand/eye coordination.
