We are looking for Associate Fitness Instructors to join our Physical Fitness Team covering Barnstaple Group on a Casual Ad-hoc basis. The role has been job evaluated to a Grade 4, so any work undertaken would be paid at an hourly rate of £14.84 per hour.
About the role:
The successful candidates will work under the supervision of the Service Fitness Advisors in managing the new Drill Ground Fitness Tests and co-ordinating a 12-month assessment cycle.
You will act in an advisory capacity to the Fitness Advisors, Service Management, Operational Firefighters and all other DSFRS employees on subjects relating to physical fitness, fitness assessments, gym inductions and the new Drill Ground Test (DGT).
Key responsibilities of the Associate Fitness Instructor role:
* To follow direction from the Fitness Advisors and maintain the physical fitness policy for Fire Service personnel, including the management of annual fitness assessments, physical training and fitness instruction for all personnel as required.
* Participate in the implementation of a formal assessment programme in accordance with the policy and review mechanism as directed by the Fitness Advisors, providing evaluation and amendments as required and necessary.
* To maintain and monitor procedures for ensuring fitness training is undertaken by designated Group, focusing on On-Call Operational staff.
* To ensure and undertake, as appropriate, the testing of fitness of operational On-Call Firefighters as determined by Service Policy and recommendations set by the Fitness Advisors. To also test members of staff who wish to participate on a voluntary basis.
* To conduct specific aerobic capacity assessments i.e. Multistage Shuttle Run and other, work related, fitness, strength and body composition assessments for all On-Call operational personnel during the 12 monthly DGT processes, working in close collaboration with the Fitness Advisors.
* To monitor and assist in the provision of rehabilitation programmes for Fire Service Personnel returning from sickness absence in collaboration with Occupational Health Providers and other agencies (e.g. Physiotherapy, orthopaedic and other specialists).
* To provide support on request from the Fitness Advisors for personnel found to be unfit or returning to duty following periods of restricted duties. To monitor fitness training related injuries and report back to the Fitness Advisors and provide summary reports and recommendations.
* To provide and monitor ‘remedial fitness’ programmes and support for those personnel found to be unfit or returning to duty following periods of restricted duties.
* On request for support from the Fitness Advisors, provide support to all personnel with specific physical health problems or in regard to obesity management.
* To advise and provide training to On-Call Firefighters on the use of Service Fitness Equipment (all locations), ensuring personnel are competent in using equipment in a safe and appropriate manner.
* To monitor fitness equipment in line with legislative requirements, reporting any faults to the Fitness Advisors and Watch Manager.
* To report any fitness training related injuries in liaison with the Health and Safety Department / Fitness Advisors and provide summary reports and recommendations to the Fitness Advisors.
* Formulate and carry out risk assessments relevant to physical training as and when necessary.
* Provide assistant and development of risk assessments and Standard Testing for fitness equipment.
