University College, Oxford, “Univ" for short, celebrates its 775 anniversary this year. The College combines an ancient heritage and history with a forward-thinking and modern approach, blending academic excellence with a friendly, welcoming atmosphere. Occupying an historic site in central Oxford, the College is a lively community of around 730 students (430 undergraduates and 300 graduates including clinical medics and PGCEs) as well as academic and support staff from a wide variety of backgrounds.
The College is about to embark on the next stage of its long and distinguished history with the first phase of its transformational development in North Oxford (Univ North) due to open at the beginning of the academic year 2025. It is the College’s most significant expansion since the 17th century.
The College is fortunate to have a substantial endowment to help support its charitable objects, alongside income from other activities.
We are seeking to appoint to the post of Finance and Investment Bursar. The successful candidate will play a critical role in overseeing all aspects of the College’s budgeting, finances, and investments. This position requires a capable leader who can provide sound guidance and overall strategic advice to the Governing Body. The goal is to ensure a College that is financially secure and continues to deliver the highest quality education to our students.
Ideal candidates will bring strong financial management experience from the public or private sector as well as an excellent understanding of investment matters. They should have a successful track record of working collaboratively, to inculcate a culture of financial literacy and commitment to rigorous financial management and budgeting.
The appointee does not need to be a qualified accountant but must be highly numerate and able to scrutinise financial information and present complex financial concepts in an understandable way. The ability to think both strategically and operationally at a high-level is essential. The successful candidate will have excellent communication skills and the ability to foster strong relationships with a diverse group of stakeholders. They must be able to gain the confidence and trust of multiple constituencies both within and outside College.
