An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual to join the Liver Unit data management and research team. We are recruiting into the post to manage and update the liver unit database, submission of activity to NHSBT, international registries, and participate in clinical research projects.
The Liver Unit at Birmingham Children's Hospital is one of three national specialist units that provides medical care, surgical care, and transplantation for children with liver and intestinal diseases, looking after 2,000 children per year and performing around 35-40 liver and intestinal transplants each year. The Liver unit has a national and international reputation in delivering excellent family-centered care to the patients with results comparable or better than national and international standards.
The post will be a part of the 4-member team that coordinates and participates in a number of clinical and commercially funded research projects. These include basic science projects looking at the genetic and molecular causes of liver diseases, epidemiology studies, and national and international clinical trials.
The post holder will be responsible for maintaining and developing information systems to collate and monitor quality measures, activity, and performance indicators within Liver Unit services. The postholder will also be responsible for input of historic transplantation, medical, and surgical data onto the Liver Unit's database (LDATA), National Biliary Atresia Registry, and other data registries which underpin the important audit and research work of the department. It is expected that the postholder will keep accurate records.
The post holder will be expected to provide support to investigators (Chief/Principal) and all research staff to ensure efficient set up and management of Clinical Trials in the Liver Unit. The postholder will work closely with the Research & Development (R&D) Clinical Lead for Liver services, the Liver clinical team including Consultants, and the WTCRF (Welcome Trust Clinical Research Facility) in setting up and managing clinical trials within the Liver service. The role also requires a close working relationship with outpatients, phlebotomy, pharmacy, and clinical laboratories. The postholder will be expected to liaise with staff representing study sponsors (commercial or non-commercial), the Research Ethics Committee, and the Health Research Authority.
The role will be split 50/50 between data management and research trial coordination but will be flexible as per the need of the service.
